Dorico adding measure after I add end dynamic -- why

Hey everybody,
I’m having a weird issue. This piece in the photo is supposed to have only 86 measures. All of the brass parts are supposed to end on a diminuendo going from “p” to “pp”. However, whenever I add the final “pp” to any of the parts, Dorico automatically creates a measure 87. When I try to delete measure 87, the “pp” as the end dynamic also goes away. I don’t think I’ve experienced this before and I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong. Any thoughts?

Hi @MichaelGolz, set this Preference, to avoid this behaviour:

If you put a note on the 1 of 87 in Horn 1, you’ll see that the pp is in fact attached to said 1, which is precisely the end of the note. To remedy, shift the final dynamic to the left by a small value, like a 16th. Visually this makes a tiny difference but it means that it falls strictly within bar 86.

Yes, I do see that the final dynamic was automatically attaching to a new measure, and maybe that’s why I couldn’t delete one without the other. I just did this workaround, where I wrote “pp” attached to the last quarter note of bar 86, and then nudged the hairpin to intersect with it. But I like your solutions better. Thank you!

Hm. Ok. I just tried checking that box. The new bar getting created still happened. Is it because I’m using whole notes that it does this, I wonder?

So far so good. I’m just adding “pp” to the final quarter beat of the last bar. If I do that, no new bars get created. Then I can align the hairpin with it. Best solution?

How did you add that dynamic? If you’re using the caret, make sure that it’s positioned within your last bar and not at the start of a new one. With the caret like this:

..adding a dynamic (or note, for that matter) will add a new bar because the caret is actually at the next 1. If you want to add a dynamic before the barline, move the caret back a grid position.

EDIT: I just noticed it’s a bit trickier when entering the hairpin and pp in one go.

When ending the hairpin at the penultimate grid postion and adding the pp at that same position, you do end up with an extra bar. That behavior I do not understand. If you want to add both in one go, extend the hairpin with Space until one grid position before the one you want the pp, advance the caret with right arrow and then add the pp.

EDIT 2: thanks @charles_piano for pointing out that it works as expected when you set the note duration and grid size to the same values (e.g. both eighths or both sixteenths).

Here your grid duration is 8th but your note duration is quarter, right?
If you set your note duration to 8th it works without using the arrow:

Of course! Makes sense. Thanks for enlightening me. :grimacing:
