I’d be interested in either the shortcut for viewing a PDF of a Dorico file or in restoring the Quick Look feature.
I will uppload the shortcut tonight or tomorrow.
Thank you! I’m wondering how it works. Does it create a new PDF from each file to be viewed or does it use the ones that Dorico has already created?
So, you do get sound through your laptop speakers? Are you trying to use a different audio output?
Dorico has its own setting for audio output, under Edit > Device Setup.
Thank’s for the answer. Now it’s solved thanks to your tip, Edit> Device Setup.
This.
Here is the quick view shortcut:
After selecting a *.dorico file, the shortcut can be invoked in three ways:
-
as Service (e.g. by choosing Finder/Services/Dorico Preview from Finder’s menu)
-
as Finder Quick Action (e.g. right click, Quick Actions/Dorico Preview)
-
with a key command which can be set in the Shortcuts app. It may be necessary to run the shortcut as service or quick action first for the the key command to get registered
Caveats:
-
the quick view window doesn’t get focused after invoking the shortcut, so it can’t be closed with esc before actually clicking on it. There is a hacky solution for this which I described in a comment inside the shortcut
-
preview window doesn’t have Open With Dorico, but Open in Preview, as we are not using Dorico’s preview generator here, but the system one for PDF files
If Dorico hasn’t yet generated preview for selected project, the shortcut will show a notification saying that the preview pdf file couldn’t be opened because it doesn’t exist.
I installed your script, it appears in the services menu and I’ve enabled scripts, but I get an OSStatus error -600.
I will check later what that could be.
I can verity that different VST plugins work just fine with latest Dorico and MacOS 15. So the issue is not general but something specific to your setup.
This particular error used to appear on iOS simulator. The solution was to rebuild the project (doesn’t apply here) or restarting the computer. You could try restarting, it doesn’t hurt.
I am not getting the error (even if I reinstall the shortcut from the link) which means that it could be something related to Sequoia (I am still on Sonoma), or possibly something related to the way Apple handles shortcut sharing and validation through iCloud.
You can try to run the shortcut from the Shortcuts app. Select a dorico project in Finder and press run in the Shortcuts app. This may tell us at which step exactly the OSStatus error occurs.
BTW, key command for running the shortcut is lost when the shortcut is shared and has to be set. I updated the original post.
These days, it’s pretty much impossible to share any kind of executable, unless you’re a registered Apple Developer.
True, but I don’t think shortcut sharing and signing is handled through dev accounts. The whole idea of shortcuts is to be used and shared by mostly non-devs.
Another way to debug the shortcut is to run it from command line.
- Open Terminal
- Select a dorico project in Finder
- Type
shortcuts run "Dorico Preview"in the Terminal and press enter
I am not sure if this will tell us anything more detailed than OSStatus error -600, but it’s worth trying.
I followed the advise I got, now it work. Thank you!

As a cute little aside, my son, when he was about 4 years old was telling me something and casually said “yesternight”. I confess it gave me a big smile and I knew immediately what he meant. I thought, how brilliant! Why don’t we use this term? Yesterday… yesternight!
I’d say yesterday evening maybe… or just last night.
I think yesternight is still a correct english word… although it is somehow archaic. it was used by Shakespeare I guess.
Sorry for my broken english ![]()
It is kind of strange that we have nothing between, or in addition to yesterday and yesteryear.
Yesterfortnight just seems a bit much.
Agreed, and ‘yestertomorrow’ instead of ‘today’ seems a bit much, too.
