Today, Apple seeded a release candidate version of macOS 15 to developers. The official version will be available on 16 September to everyone.
Has the team tested Dorico with Sequoia? Are there any major incompatibilities? And how long does it usually take for Dorico (and other Steinberg products) to be officially supported on new macOS versions?
The team usually posts a statement about each new Apple version when it is released.
I’ve been using Dorico on the betas with no problems. (Though it has to be said that the last time there was a problem with a new OS, I didn’t notice the issue…! )
However, Apple has removed the old QuickLook framework, so the previews of the Dorico file no longer show in the Finder.
It always pays to be slightly behind the bleeding edge. (None of the cool AI stuff is ready, anyway.)
And generally, how is Steinberg historically with supports for the current macOS version in previous versions of their software if the new versions are released in roughly the same time as the new macOS versions?
For example, let’s say that they release Dorico 6 or Cubase 14 in November. Would they ever update Dorico 5 and Cubase 13 for Sequoia? Not talking about any new features or super big changes, just some critical bugs? I can live with not having Quick Look although, arguably, that should have been changed long time ago (I guess in Qt itself). Deprecations are announced years before removal and Qt is not cheap for commercial use…
We have been testing on developer betas of Sequoia, and we will provide an official statement about compatibility when (or shortly after) Sequoia is released next week.
As Ben says, Dorico’s existing Quick Look generator will no longer work in Sequoia because the old deprecated framework has now been removed. We already have a new Quick Look app extension in Dorico for iPad, which we can port to macOS, but there are some complications with how app extensions are provisioned. We’re not yet sure whether we will introduce a Dorico 5 update that includes these app extensions, or whether this will wait for the next major version. (It depends how complicated it is to retrofit the new stuff to the v5 code.)
The other thing to be aware of is that there is a new permissions prompt (well, there are many new permissions prompts, but one of particular relevance) that will appear when you run Dorico for the first time about allowing access to the local network. It may appear multiple times (for e.g. the MediaBay server, and for the audio engine), and you have to click Allow on each one. If you don’t allow this access, the audio engine won’t start correctly, and consequently Dorico will also not start correctly.
We will provide full details via our support pages in due course.
I’ve just made a shortcut (in Shortcuts app on macOS) that extracts PDF preview from a *.dorico file and shows it in Quick Look. I could share it here, but I don’t know if that’s OK with you as the shortcut reveals the structure of .dorico bundle.
Anyone can look into .dorico bundle.
Luckily this is indeed a minor issue and does not prevent us from working in D.
I am one of those that is curious and jumps into new OS. Not the smartest move always but it is necessary to also have users that jump in and find issues.
Has anyone tried firing up Finale under Sequoia?? I wonder if it works at all. I believe Makemusic sent an email about the impending Apple release…it was mostly an announcement that it wouldn’t be supported with another pitch to switch to Dorico.
I mean the VST instruments that comes with Dorico 5.1.51, Halion sonic7, Groove agent se5 etc. No error messages. I installed the whole package, everything with the Steinberg Activation Manager. The sound is only coming true my laptop MacBook Pro when I play Dorico. Is there any driver for Steinberg instruments that must be installed?
