Dorico Constantly making new instances of Halion Sonic

Hi,
I am having trouble with Dorico creating new instances of Halion Sonic when I change instrument settings or even copy and paste music from one instrument staff to another. I had originally opted not to install Halion at all because I do not need/want to use it. I ended up installing Halion because I was unable to assign divisi instruments to seperate kontakt channels and for some reason installing Hallion fixed that. I simply can’t work this way because every time I need to change a setting or paste from one instrument I end up having to wait (sometimes a very long time) for Dorico to make yet another instance of Halion.

Is there some way to completely disable Dorico using Halion at all?

Thank you for any help!

Welcome to the forum @composingcoderstudio .

You can tell Dorico in it’s Preferences dialog which playback template to use as default. You can choose this to be the Silent template, which does not load any VSTinstrument at all, or you can create your own template which only uses VSTinstruments you want (e.g. Kontakt).

Thank you for your response, I probably should have mentioned that already. I am using the silent template.

That is surprising, because then something is completely wrong with your configuration or you ran into a bug. Because with the Silent template certainly no HALion instances shall get created. We need to wait what @dspreadbury has to say on your case.

Hi Ulf,

I was wondering if there has been any progress on my case? I have uninstalled Halion completely and somehow the issue is persisting even then.

For reference, this is what my playback settings look like:

All the best

Hi, now I see, Daniel never came back to you, your case slipped through.

Do you have actually a project where that always happens and that you could send to me?

Yes, I have a transcription I am working on for my PhD where this has started happening constantly. I am currently seeing if uninstalling and reinstalling Dorico will fix the issue. Below is my drive link to the file (the upload button says the file is too big).

Thank you for looking into this!

Edit: Uninstalling and reinstalling did not work unfortunately

Thanks for attaching the project, and sorry that I hadn’t personally got to this thread yet. There are still a hundred or so threads that have started in the last week I’ve not yet had a chance to read, but I’m making my way slowly through them, though of course every time I go off to do something else, dozens more new threads pop up…

Anyway, in your project, you are not using the Silence playback template. The settings you showed in your earlier screenshot show what Dorico will do when creating a new project. The settings in your current project can be seen by choosing Play > Playback Template, which shows that you are using the HALion Sonic Selection, Olympus playback template.

What sounds do you actually want to use for playback in this project? If you are looking for a “set and forget” experience, I would recommend choosing Iconica Sketch, HSO, HALion Sonic Sel., Olympus, GASE, though this of course requires that HALion Sonic and all of the recommended content is installed. Alternatively, you might find NotePerformer more to your liking: NotePerformer is not made by Steinberg, but it integrates really well with Dorico, and many users prefer its playback to the sounds that come with Dorico. You can download a free trial of NotePerformer from www.noteperformer.com.

If you decide to try NotePerformer, after installing it, restart Dorico, open your project, go to Play > Playback Template and select NotePerformer from the list of playback templates, then click Apply and Close.

Provided you’re using one of the factory playback templates, everything will work as it should, and Dorico won’t spontaneously load new instances of HALion unless it has run out of slots/channels in the instances already loaded.
