Dorico crashing on the iPad

Does anyone else have problems with this? It crashes every few minutes here… I’m on the newest versions of Dorico and of iPadOS.

Yes. Every few minutes, no matter what I am doing, it just crashes. It even crashes when just idle. If this is not fixed I cannot see myself upgrading to the paid version. This is unstable.

I’m sure the dev team and others will be eager to help. A good first step would be to upload the project that’s causing the app to crash.

Sure. It’s a very simple project, but maybe there’s something in it. I’ve also attached the diagnostics report.

This is my project. Nothing special. I wasn’t even touching it when it crashed.

I’m really sorry to hear about the crashes you’re experiencing. Unfortunately, diagnostic reports saved from the iPad version don’t include the actual crash logs, which are squirrelled away inside Settings. This page describes how to find them on your device:

If you can find the files whose names begin Dorico and end .ips and attach them here, that would be really helpful.

There are many, so I will just provide the last one that matches the above mentioned file crash. If you need any of the others let me know.

Thanks

I’ve just opened Dorico to see if the crashing also affected my ageing iPad Pro 2nd gen. It did. After a couple of minutes: :bomb::collision:
Here’s the Diagnostics report:

@Nickie_Foenshauge, unfortunately, as explained in other threads, diagnostic reports saved from the iPad don’t contain crash logs, so your diagnostics are unfortunately not helpful.

However, the crash log provided by @MusicPanda here and by another user in another thread do give a clue as to what is going on: Dorico is crashing when trying to auto-save, which explains why it seems random. We’ll look into this urgently and do our best to find the problem as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, if you have a hardware keyboard attached, you should be able to manually save the project with Cmd+S.

I’m sorry for the inconvenience caused.

That sounds likely as I have noted that after a crash, the changes entered up to that point, were not saved. So it appears as a saving related issue. Pun not intended.

I’m also attaching two crash reports, just in case that helps anyone. Hope we can get it fixed soon.

This is a completely different issue. It occurs inside the code that gets triggered after some kind of UI environment change. It could be iPad rotation, resizing of Dorico’s window (i.e. opening another app next to it) etc. It would be really helpful if you could write steps to reproduce the crash or at least what exactly were you doing when Dorico crashed.

EDIT:

Now when I saw the crash report again, it seеms that Dorico was running in the background and crashed during generation of the snapshot that’s shown in the task switcher, not really during UI transitions triggered by user. The UI transition method (traitCollectionDidChange) is on the top of stack and the crash indeed appears to occur there. On the top of my head, the system calls that method during snapshot generation to ensure that the snapshot is properly generated for light and dark mode (if the app supports two modes), in case user switches the mode while the app is in the background. But it’s definitely not the autosave bug and I can’t reproduce it while moving Dorico to the background and going back.

Thank you ikos. I had my phone open with a piece on it with a piece and wanted to copy, and was quietly typing it into Dorico…
I will try later if my crash also occurs if Dorico is the only app I have opened.

Hello everyone. I closed all apps and tried typing something in Dorico again. It stayed open maybe a minute longer than before, but still crashed without saving anything I had written. Crash report attached.

As @charles_piano pointed above, this crash has already been fixed and the fix will be available soon. However, your previous crash reports show a completely different issue, probably not nearly as critical.

Version 6.02 is still crashing on the IPad ( latest version). Out of nowhere it crashes, just playing a score. I didn’t have this before.

Yes, this is the auto-save related crash, which is fixed. An update will be released as soon as it is approved by Apple, but it’s a holiday weekend in the US, and I think the App Review team is out enjoying fireworks, hot dogs, and beer.
