I am posting this topic even though I know that, as of November 2024, Dorico does not allow note-independent copying of fingering numbers. Since I don’t know of any other way to relay feature requests to Steinberg, I am posting them here.
I quickly want to explain why note-independent copying of fingering numbers would be useful for me. For example, a scale may have the same fingering in different keys. It would be great to be able to copy the fingering to those scales. In fact, I have never worked with a music notation program that didn’t have this feature. I read on this forum that earlier versions of Dorico didn’t even allow for copying articulations!! Copying fingering can, for some users, be just as important.
Dear Dorico designers, if you are reading this, I hope you can implement note-independent copying of fingering numbers sooner rather than later.
CHEERS!
I agree–this type of filtered layer is an everyday occurrence in Finale world. Is there really no way to do this?
A couple of thoughts, if I may (for the time being, till paste special for fingering will possibly/hopefully be available):
- inputting fingerings is rather fast, using the popover
- the probability that the exact same fingering will be used in different passages is less then, for example, articulations in ostinato passages, except for the case of scales exercises but only in certain keys (I speak as pianist, as I am not familiar with guitar or brass fingering)
- in this case (scales exercises) a possible way is to create the fingering for one scale first , and then copy (Alt+click) or repeat (R) the scale that has the fingering to another place, and either move it diatonically with Alt(Option)+up or down arrow keys, or use the transpose functionality, or the Note Tools popover (Shift+I):

Indeed, you cannot copy fingerings independently from notes for the same reason that you cannot select them independently from notes: they are properties of notes. But I agree that it would be useful to be able to copy and paste fingerings independently of notes, and we’ll add this to our backlog for future implementation. Please understand that we cannot make a specific commitment about when particular features will be implemented.
