Dorico does not close fully on Mac

When I close Dorico using the red button on the top left, the window closes but the app stays open:
.
and I have to quit it before opening again.
Is this by design or an issue?

That’s standard behaviour on a Mac for any app.

The Red dot closes the window. Apps are separate from their windows.

You shouldn’t “have to” quit it if you’re going to re-launch it again.

But I can’t open it again using that icon. And I know there are some apps that close upon closing the window.

Dorico can be configured to close a file and then show the Hub, which would allow one to open a new Dorico file or exit the application entirely.

One can always exit both program and file from the file menu (Quit or Exit).

Cmd-Q will close the program completely. If you’re wanting to be a long-term power user, eschew the mouse as much as possible anyways.

I’ve learned to leave Dorico open to avoid the audio engine having to start up, which takes time.

The red dot is on a window. If you close the window, then there is no window, so there is no red dot icon!

Apple’s Interface Guidelines suggest that apps with only one window, like System Settings, should quit when that window is closed. Apps that can have lots of window, like Word or Dorico, should stay running, even when all windows are closed.
You can still do things from the menubar when there are no windows.

I actually don’t have my own computer, so having it running in the background isn’t an option.

I wouldn’t include Dorico in this category, every time I try to have multiple windows open it lags immensely. Should I deactivate one of the projects so that they aren’t fighting over the playback engine?

Dorico loads the playback sounds for the project that you put on the front if they have/had the playback activated in their last “being on front” status (only one project at a time can have the playback activated: this is the normal behaviour of other DAWs as Cubase or Logic). This causes the lagging that you are referring to if you keep switching windows with activated playback on each. I suggest you only have one project activated, and deactivate the playback for the rest of the projects with this icon set on gray:

There is a very convenient preference in Preferences/Play dialogue to handle the activation behaviour when opening multiple projects:
