Dorico is unusably slow - looking for advice / tips

Hi, I would love to get some advice.
I have a small orchestral score (<300 bars).
If I input, say, 10-15 notes in sequence, I have to wait 15-20 seconds for all the notes to update. Not really sure what’s a good way around it.
The same issue occurs if I try to paste anything. I have to wait a while before the program lets me continue working.
I’m in Galley view, so if there’s any way to disable the re-rendering of the page view, maybe that’ll speed it up.

I’m running on desktop Windows 11
64 GB DDR5
Intel Core i9-13900K
Dorico is installed on a Samsung SSD 990 Pro partition.

I’m at my wits end. Every passage I type in is accompanied by me having to wait 15-30 seconds before I can continue.

Please any advise will be highly welcome!

Also: If you’re in NYC and you think you can come and fix my issue and make Dorico usable, I’m happy to pay you $300.

Press the vst activate button to deactivate and see if there is a change in responsiveness:

Is it in galley view when you open up the project? Did you ever switch to page view? Do you have condensing enabled?

Not saving to a cl9ud service are you?

Unscientific, but do a total removal and clean reinstall to establish a known baseline.

It may sound ridiculous but turn off Bluetooth is you have it on.

Run Samsung Magician to check the status and health of your NVME drive.

Windows 11 Insider Preview or plain domestic Windows 11?

Finally what video card - also important to know. There can be issues with certain Nvidia cards (as we have seen in some other topics).

Have you studied the Windows event logs for sets of errors on the system?

I’d come over and fix it but Melbourne is a bt far away!

Unfortunately this has no effect on the speed.

Never switched to page view and I don’t have condensing on.

I’m not saving to the cloud.
Clean install doesn’t help, but it seems like if I restart the program it’s faster at first and slows down after being open for a while. Restarting again mitigates it to some degree.
Samsung Magician says status is “Good”.
I’m using Windows 11 Insider preview.
I have a MSI Gaming GeForce GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5X
According to the event logs, last application error was in January.
If you can fix this I’ll pay for your ticket from Melbourne haha! I appreciate the help!

Before you irrevocably commit to paying Andro’s airfare, be aware that the Melbourne he lives in (as do I) is the one in Australia, not the one in Florida.

I always forget there is a Melbourne in America.

That is a very old card (2016) by current standards, unless it is a typo.

Please try disabling that and using your onboard graphics.

What about audio interface? Details?

I have had issues with Insider Preview - but darn it, its difficult to get off that program. You have to disable it and then wait months for a new domestic Windows release to come out.

99.9% irrelevant. Any discrete card is mega-overkill for 2D software like Dorico unless you’re trying to drive 5 4K displays simultaneously or something.

@Michael_Seltenreich
You project is relatively small so this seems an unusual behavior . Does this happen also on other projects? Which playback instruments/template etc. are you using?
Can you post your project here, to see if this is file specific or system specific?

A couple of things you can try:

-Go in engrave mode and click on Lock Layout (this seems to reduce the background calculationsthat D is doing. When you are finished with note input in Galley View, and start layouting, then you can Reset the Layout with the other icon)

-uncheck, or even delete all parts layout on the right of Setup Mode (you can recreate the default parts layout with the Setup menu when you are finished with music entry)

-Deactivate temporarily Windows Defender and any Antivirus that you have, (and switch off wi-fi to be sure) to deactivate any background scanning.

-if you use more than one display, try to work with only one.

Does some of this help?

Not so if there are issues with the card/driver and it is causing delays in Window response. Old cards are not well supported. There are reports of this with Cubase and Dorico.

I maintain it is worth trying the onboard graphics as a troubleshooting test to eliminate this possibility. Given that this is a mysterious and difficult sitution, its worth trying every little thing.

Refere to my post here. Please try System Informer to invesatigate what is happening with processes on your system.

Is your system overclocked, overheating, and therefore throttling?

And… what version of Dorico?

And how about your audio interface details? Again, issues with drivers can result in IO waits and reduced performance.

So many questions. Are you using NVidia GEForce Experience? There have been issues with it consuming large CPU this year. If so, uninstall it - unless you are a big gamer. It’s not necessary and just chews CPU. You can update NVidia graphics drivers directly from the NVidia website.

Last one for today - ridiculous though it may be, try saving the file out under a new name, quit Dorico, restart and load the new file. This sounds like nonsense but I feel sure I recall this as a possible fix somewhere in this forum once.

Ahha! Locking the layout does seem to do something! YES!
