I am on a Mac. I just downloaded the Garritan GPO5 playback template and imported it (Play/Playback template…) and it was working fine. In a completely unrelated but very coincidental action, I deleted the folder users/shared/GIFF_Samples. Now, when I playback my piece that uses the GPO5, I get the following error.
Realizing my error, I removed the old GPO5, redownloaded a new GPO5 from the Steinberg site, reinstalled it (GPO5.dorico_pt) and reimported it. I then reconnected my instruments to the correct player and expression maps,… but I’m still getting the same error. The /Users/Shared/GIFF_Samples/ folder doesn’t exist. I’m not sure if my problem is a Dorico issue or a Mac-OS issue. I’m not very proficient in either.
Why indeed. And looking for a folder that no longer exists… even though the GPO5 is a newly downloaded and imported GPO5. Let me go through the my steps, which I’ve just repeated to no avail. Maybe I’m doing something wrong.
I open my piece of music that wants to use the GPO5. It can’t find it.
I go to Play/Playback template and delete the current GPO5. I select “Apply and Close” and close the playback template screen.
I then reopen the playback template screen and import GPO5.dorico_pt. Dorico asks me, "Do you wish to overwrite existing Playback Templates (including the templates they reference)? I select OK.
GPO5 reappears in my selection of playback templates. I select it and enter “Apply and Close” again.
My Glockenspiel is linked to 17-GPO5 Glockenspiel track 1 but not to an expression map. When I select the “e”, I get the error message, "ARIA Player Error. Instrument. Notation/“instrument name” was not found. (This message only appears the first time I attempt this. This happened when I first installed the GPO5 and it didn’t cause me a problem. I select “OK”. I then add Glockenspiel to track 1.
I can send a screenshot but Dorico is now freezing up at the error messages and I have to completely shut down my computer to get it to close. (Force quit closes Dorico but not the error message or spinning wheel.)
My question is, am I doing something wrong? That’s usually the case.
I got the template from Benwiggy’s first link, but it worked the other day when I first used that link. The problem is that I mistakenly deleted the users/shared/GIFF_Samples/ folder that Dorico is wanting to look into. Finder shows that it does not exist (and I emptied my trash where it had gone to).
I can go through the process again with the 2nd link that Benwiggy gave me. I’ll attach a file of it shortly. (Note - the piece is written in an alternative 27-EDO musical tuning system. Not sure if that’s an issue or not for sharing the file.)
As the folder doesn’t exist and as Ben mentioned in his first response you have to (re)install the GIFF samples from the Finale installer. Apparently you don’t have the Garritan Personal Orchestra 5 library, but the playback template is supposed to work with Garritan Instruments for Finale (GIFF) as well, I guess.
This may be the problem. Somehow, I was able to playback using the playback template from Dorico that I had downloaded yesterday (or the day before). But, I believe what I have is Garritan Instruments for Finale. I was just conflating that with GPO5.
When I open and try to playback the file I had created yesterday, I get this message:
I, again, deleted the playback template titled GPO5 and tried to install the newly downloaded sforzando (for Mac), but going to Play/playback template/import… it’s grey’ed out. If I go to finder and double click on sforzando, I get this message:
OK, Well you certainly are using the GIFF instruments in your ARIA VSTs. That suggests that you’re using the “Finale default sounds” template from the Dorico Blog, which is the right thing. (Sorry, I keep forgetting that John has made a GIFF template.)
The instruments all work here, so any problem is down to your setup.
You’ll need to reinstall the GIFF samples, either from your backup, or by re-installing Finale. And the same for anything else you deleted.
The business with Sforzando is simply to install the latest ARIA Engine, which is used by both Sforzando and ARIA Player. You can see the Version numbers in the ARIA Settings tab.
Fantastic. That worked. I had tried to just reinstall the GIFF_Samples folder but ran into some problems. Then, I did what you suggested and just reinstalled Finale 27 along with the GIFF files. Everything is working properly. Thank you both for your help.
