Dorico Tutorial

Hello Dorico community,

I have Dorico 5, but I am completely overwhelmed by the program’s wide range of functions.
I made my first attempts with Dorico 1 or 2 with Youtube tutorial videos by Anthony Hughes.
In the meantime, the Dorico channel on YouTube has become so extensive that I can no longer find my way around.
I’m looking for a video tutorial - ideally in German -
that gives a step-by-step and practical introduction to the extensive range of functions in Dorico 5,
The numerous Dorico YouTube playlists are sure to contain something similar,
I would be very grateful if you could name and link relevant playlists.

Many thanks and best regards,
Roman

Have you had a look at the Dorico First Steps guide? It’s not German but it’s amazing!

Hello Daniel,

thxs a lot.
To be honest, I prefer Videos.
The First Steps guide seems to be only text.
With the videos of Anthony Hughes I could learn a lot.
But which Youtube-Playlists are both step-by-step instructions and up-to-date?
Thx, best, Roman

Would better if you asked what you are stuck on. Pop ups? layouts? adding instruments to players?

Yes, this would be very helpful.

Here is a recent playlist of Dorico tutorials on Note Input:

This may be even better:

Hi Sergei_Mozart,

I’m not really stuck.
On the contrary, I have already implemented many projects with Dorico.
But I keep realizing that I’m not familiar with the basic structure of Dorico.
I would therefore be interested in a step-by-step course on this program,
to understand the whole structure right from the start…
Everything else will come with time anyway…

Hi Daniel,

I’m familiar with the playlist for Note input and I’m sure it’s something like what I need…
However, it only deals with note input, all the other content such as Engrave, Playback, etc. is not included…

Did you check the second link?

There is a YouTube playlist of Dorico tutorials in German here:

The preview there just shows the first one but when you open it in YouTube you will see the list of 70 videos.

@ Daniel and mducharme:
I’m no finale-user,
Dorico is my first notation-software.
Do you think that playlist is the right for my?

Yes, there are many videos on Dorico in that playlist, there are 70 of them. They are not all for Finale users. It is just that several recent Dorico videos have been for Finale users. I do not understand German so I cannot tell what the titles are to recommend a specific video, but there are many there. Quite a few of the videos are very long (more than an hour) as recordings from livestreams.

The finale one just has a lot of great info about the features (not necessarily useful just for Finale users)

@ mducharme and Daniel:
Thank you for your info.
I’ll see which of the videos fit.

The Finale one has heaps of chapters so you can skip to a few and get an idea etc

@ Daniel:
Thx again for introducing the First-Steps-Guide.
By the way: It’s also available as PDF in different languages:

I’m sure that will help a lot… even it’s not in video-form, so I can read and learn in my own tempo

That’s the Dorico 4 First Steps guide - you should check if there is one for Dorico 5 in German as well.

EDIT: Here: Dorico 5 First Steps Documentation

The latest version of First Steps is here for English.

We will get the updated text for 5.1 translated and available in the near future.

The new help portal is now the best way to access all versions and languages for First Steps, because the additional resources are attached directly to the webhelp version.

Not sure if you saw the “Dorico auf Deutsch” Playlists, when you checked the Youtube channel. You can find lots of videos from @Markus_Hartmann explaining all concepts in livestreams.

(40) Dorico 5 | “Dorico auf Deutsch” Livestreams - YouTube

There are also short tutorials starting with basic note input to adding articulations and others. Just have a look for videos with the mark “Auf Deutsch” on it.

Another resource is the Dorico blog, that is also available in German.

I am a Finale user. I started watching Dorico videos because videos use to be the best for me. But I gave up. Then I took the First-step guide from one end to the other. It is very thorough and with illustrations throughout, so you are sure that you are doing the right thing. Much better than video.

I thank you all for your input!

@ Lillie Harris:
Isn’t this PDF for Dorico 5 (mducharme regarded to) the same as the content via the link you sent?
'Cause it’s available in German.
