I am writing a work for string orchestra, with several divisi parts.
For the celli, a system begins with divisi “a 2”, but I’d like to change it to “a 3” in the
middle of the system. This doesn’t seem possible. The entire cello part on the given
page can either be made with 2 staves (and no option to add a 3rd line with divisi label
in middle) or 3 staves.
Suggestions?
Ideally, the system has 2 staves, with divisi “a 2”, then a 3rd voice can be added in the
middle (sharing the existing 2nd staff with the 2nd voice) with label “a 3”. Then the
next page would have 3 staves.
So far, changing from div a 2 to div a 3 can only occur at system breaks. Perhaps now that cut-aways have been implemented this may change in the future, but not yet.
Thanks. Any hack to add an additional entering 3rd part into one of the 2 initial staves, in mid-system, and annotate in mid-system with ‘a 3’? (all keeping 2 staves in this system, until getting to the next page with 3 separate staves)
Thanks, very useful. The only caveat is that it doesn’t quite suggest an equal # of players in each sub-group – rather, the 3rd group only divided further in half.
Actually, it is an equal number of players. If you have 12 players, for example, you’ve got 4 on the first div, 4 on the second div, 2 on the upper third, and 2 on the lower third – so 6 on each line. They just may not be sitting all together!
Also, thanks to the cutaway feature, you can get this kind of display (I added “div a 2” and “div a 3” as text., the div a 3 starts at the begining of the system, and I put another one on the 3d bar to show the labels.)
I think this was already possible by simply adding an extra staff where needed and using the text object. No need for cutaways. Sure, less elegant, but effective!
Nice suggestion from @asherber and @Derrek, this will work!
I don’t yet have Dorico 6, but the cutout in the example by @charles_piano would be ideal; I assume not doable in Dorico 5.
