Dot instead of tie

Good afternoon:) I got a pattern, two 16th notes followed by a dotted 4th note. Dorico makes it like two 16th note, one 8th note and one 4th note and the last two is tied. Bar signature is common time. The pattern starts the bar. How can I kill tie and using a dotted 4th note instead?

As I’m sure you know, Dorico’s doing that because that’s by far the most common way to handle that rhythm.

The most straightforward way to handle that is by using force duration (o).

Wow, again a reply triple light speed! Thank you so much!!! I’ve tried it and it worked. And need to admit my version is not really pretty:)))))

The broader method is to go to Library > Notation Options > Note Grouping, and check whether any of those available defaults cover this situation for you.

I haven’t found the solution there. The force duration thingy worked well though:) And drow on a blank sheet in the kitchen both image, 16+16+4. , and 16+16+8+4 with the ties and asked my wife which one she thinks is better and she instantly pointed at Dorico’s solution! Quite annoying:) Tomorrow I’ll ask Bach about his point of view, it is too late to call him now…:))))

I’m glad that specific solution worked, @kaposi.g, but I should tell: when @Lillie_Harris speaks we all listen. Definitely get to know those options she points you to.

P.S. – I think your wife shows wisdom in her beaming preferences.

Annoyingly!!!:)))))

I hope I wasn’t disrespectful to Lillie though:)

FYI:

This setting solved the issue for me (although it might trigger other scenarios that are unwanted)

@kaposi.g,

Another quick way to force duration is to press O during Note Input, enter the quaver, press O again to turn off Force Duration, and then use (Edited) Shift+Alt+right arrow to extend the note.

EDIT:
ARGH!!! Originally, I forgot the F in Shift… it’s funny if you want to try typing it in and see what the preview displays…

Daniel, this doesn’t work, don’t know why. But hey, I’m forcing duration and that’s it:)

Do you want to attach an empty version of this project so we can see your settings?

I’ve tried it in a new project now. It worked perfectly what Lillie and you’ve said. But this Piazzola piece doesn’t…

What you can see here is already corrected by ‘forcing duration’ trick, but recently I tried to create one more just for a try and it didn’t succeed.

I haven’t looked at your project yet, but another trick you can employ for note and beam grouping is to specify it in the time signature.

Eg if you want to show “7/8” but group beams/notes into 2+3+2, enter [2+3+2]/8 into the time signatures popover. You’ll get a 7/8-appearing time signature, with the specified groupings in every bar.
