I’m just about to set up and all I have is an old midi keyboard and a Dr Synth - does anyone have any tips or advice - would be appreciated.

Just that you will also need at least a midi interface and, if you want to record audio, an audio interface. Like the Steinberg UR22 or M-Audio M-Track Plus.
