Drum Machine Presets

The Download Assistant for C15 shows the following, but I don’t see much about what they are.

So I played around a little looking in the presets. As far as I can tell the “Content” is presets.

  • Either “Track Presets - Drum” here

  • or Pattern presets - Pattern Editor here

So it seems like drum patterns in general could be either be 1) in the Beat Designer MIDI Plugin, 2) in a Drum Machine Drum Pattern or 3) in Groove Agent.

Drum Machine Content Pack 2 preset names have entries in both Track Presets and Pattern Presets. Drum Machine Content Pack 1 only exists in Track Presets.
PATTERN PRESETS

TRACK PRESETS

Both type of preset (Pattern and Track) can be dragged to the project to create a new track. They are identical except the if you drag from Pattern Presets you get the Drum Machine with samples and patterns and if you drag from Track Presets you only get the samples.

And there’s no way, having dragged in a track preset to access any of the paterns, theres no way to directly load patterns into a pre-existing Drum Machine Track part.

So here I’ve added Beast Mode as a Track Preset, drawn a part using the pencil and tried to see what patterns are available

N.B. There’s no “load pattern” option

On the other hand if I create a track by dragging in Beast Mode as a Pattern Preset

So if I wanted to use patterns from one Drum Machine preset in another Drum Machine preset, there’s no direct way, except to use the new “Convert Pattern Event to MIDI Part” shenanigans which seems like a pretty convoluted way.

I hope that info may have helped someone!

I’ve recently gone through all the additional content in the Download manager, and tried to find out what they actually are… not an easy task. For some, you find a vague description on the Steinberg web site, more marketing than proper info, for others, not even that.

It would be really more user friendly to have one or two descriptive sentences for each entry there. But then the whole triumvirate of Download, Activation and Library manager is not really user friendly…

I’m not sure if I’ve understood the problem exactly right but I have had a similar issue. Ive found a track preset I like called big beat 135. But I want the drums to be the same drums I use in my song, so I just want to copy the pattern. I’ve found a way to do that!

  1. create a big beat preset track

  2. create a MIDI track - change the MIDI input to “big beat”

  3. Press record and play - the MIDI data for big beat is recorded on the MIDI track

  4. Drag this to your drum track - it’ll be in key editor format

  5. pencil new area in this track as a pattern event

  6. overlap these and click “show lanes” icon in inspector

  7. you can then use this the manually create the exact rhythm on your existing drum track. Opening drum machine and clicking “MIDI follow” can also help. You can also create a pattern event from this on the big beat drum track and then import your own drum machine
