I really like the ability to use Cues over slashed for the drum set. But the thing that I’m struggling with is when I need a rhythm over the slashes that I’m not able to create with Cues (like just the hits within an 1/8th note line), I then have to use a cymbal for the notes and it’s a different size and note head than the Cues. Is there a way to make the Cues be X note heads so they match? Or make the cymbal be smaller notes? I know I can make the Cues bigger and change the note heads of the cymbals.
I’m having trouble visualizing this, unfortunately… Could you give an example?
Well, the cue in the second half comes from the guitar, and you could use actual slashes and get rid of the rests around it.
In the first half, you could do the same, but take the cue from the third staff, I can’t tell which instrument that is, though…
Or do you want to use the x-noteheads?
B.
These are just examples. The first 2 bars show if I used cues from the top stave, it would create the wrong rhythm for the drums. Yes I could use the bass in this example, but either way, this is creating a mix of X notes and regular notes. Is there a way to make the cues have X note heads? So they match the notes from the cymbal. It’s a lot quicker to use Cues, then enter all the hits in the cymbal part and all the slashes.
Is there a way to mix the 2, cues and cymbal hits and have them look the same?
Yes, like this:
Hope this makes sense?
Cheers,
Benji
P.S.: I think I understand now, you want cues that do not actually occur in any instrument? Use a dummy player, like so:
@scarryer , did this help you along at all? No rush, of course, but I’d still like to know…
Cheers, Benji
Yes that works. Is it possible to add a “Cue” instrument to the drum layout so that where I needed a contrasting rhythm, instead of putting them on a separate stave, I could just do those bars with notes over the drum part, like using a cymbal for the rhythms? So be able to set the cymbal to be smaller and slashes, so it matches the Cue notes. Thus using a mix of both Cues and Cymbal notes, that match?
Hi!
What I have trouble understanding is: Do you want to use x-noteheads for cymbals or have to use them? You wrote:
Using my method, you do not have to use the x-notes at all, which to me looks clearer for the drummer…
However: If you use the Dummy Player, then you could disable the slash notation for the cue, and then change the noteheads in the Dummy Cue Staff to x-noteheads manually. This way, your cue would reflect exactly what is written in the Dummy Staff.
Cheers,
Benji
Is there a way to set the note heads for the Cue to be X and Diamond so it matches the Cymbal. There are options to set the note head in the Engraving Options-Cues-Rhythmic Slashes, but no option for X note heads. Where could I change the note heads in one of the Note Head Sets listed to make it match?
Do you care about Drum playback here? Or do you just want to notate what the drummer needs to see? If you only care about what the drummer needs to see in their part, don’t use a percussion instrument and just write whatever you want. You don’t really need to bother with cues at all if you don’t want to.
Since I just input the notes above the staff at bar 14 here, it would be easy to switch those to X noteheads if I wanted to. Just select one of the options under Crosses:
