With either the basic or full drum kits chosen, I am able to input notes, by scrolling using the computer keyboard or with my midi keyboard to input “natural notes” only…ie. snare drum, closed high hat…but not the percussion playing techniques, such as cross stick, rim shot, open high hat, ride bell, etc. What I CAN do is input these natural notes, then using the “Shift/Option/Up Arrow” method change these into adjusted notation and sounds. However this is a very time consuming method of input and undesirable. I have seen on Dorico tutorials that these playing techniques should be enabled for input via computer and midi.
Hi @vaughnroberts.vr, first of all I suggest the video below, till someone will give an comprehensive answer:
Thanks Christian, I’ve watched that video multiple times…in this John demonstrates playing an open hi-hat on a Bb (?) on the midi keyboard…and I am not able to play anything other than “natural notes”…ie. closed hi-hat, snare drum (not cross-stick, etc) on either midi midi or computer keyboard. It is only when I input the “natural notes” and use Shift-option-up arrow that I can access the “instrument playing techniques”.
Ok Christian. Here’s the simplest way to explain this -
In Jon’s Percussion and Drum Set Notation video…at 50:50 he plays a closed hi hat on F# on his midi keyboard, and an open hi hat on a Bb.
This does not work on my midi keyboard, nor my computer keyboard.
Only the natural notes are triggered.
What you have suggested doing in key edit achieves the exact same result as I am getting when I enter four snare drum quarter notes and then Shift Opt Up Arrow them into notation and tonality for Snare, Rim, Cross Stick, and Side Stick. But I can’t input them without first entering natural note heads and making the adjustment…which is EXACTLY what you did in key editor.
This IS doable, as Jon demonstrated in the video. There must be a midi assignment made to give the “playing techniques” a midi note. I’m figuring this must be the issue that needs to be resolved…
Do you have Dorico 5.1.70?
Do you have these Preferences correctly set? (you can there also check if your middle C corresponds to midi note 60, if you press the learn keyboard icon and press that note on your keyboard):
Hi Christian,
Sorry for the delay……yesterday I exceeded my quota of queries and responses and was put in timeout for 24 hours
Yes…I just installed Dorico 5.1.70 yesterday afternoon.
Yes my Percussion Input preferences match those identically.
Yes…the middle C on my keyboard corresponds to C4 on the piano learn keyboard.
What I have discovered is that on my midi keyboard the drum voices exist from C2… There are a full layout…. And there is also a partial layout higher up on the kit, at C4. This just includes kick and hi hat with foot and closed hi hat. (Though the open high hat, which we amended to circular diamond note head is back to the default… But I can live with that).
Now on my computer keyboard I get this…
A = Fl tom
C = snare
D = tom 2
E = tom 1
F = Kick
G = Hi-hat (closed)
To access ride, crash etc I can use the up arrow in note entry mode…
But as I’ve said repeatedly, in order to access the non “normal” playing techniques I must first enter the natural note, highlight the note, and then toggle it to the new display/playback using shift/opt/up arrow…with the same effect as you moving the playing technique boxes in note editor.
I am NOT able to option/up arrow through the playing techniques, as stated in Anthony’s Tips Tuesday video on Cycle Through Percussion Instruments. I can only adjust them with shift/opt/up arrow once they have been input as natural notes….
This is what I desperately need to remedy….
Probably useless question, but… is the percussion map you’re using the appropriate one? That would be in Play mode, left panel, Track routing, select the kit and see what VST is used and which perc map is set?
Hi Marc,
Well… In terms of the mapping; I do have access to the relevant notes basically on both midi keyboard, and computer keyboard.… I’m in the track inspector now and it shows 02 Halion sonic with the Groove Agent SE studio kit….and playback is fine.
What isn’t working is the opt/up arrow command to percussion playing techniques.
I’m flailing around in preferences/key commands to search for something which might be relevant….but it’s a jungle in there……
Or is it in percussion maps?? Or somewhere else?
Not sure……need help

Can you share a cut-down version of your file (we only need the drum kit actually)
So that we can play with it and bring useful advice?
Bad drums.dorico (2.3 MB)
Sure…that sounds awesome.
I tested your file. Here the results visually. I used the settings as in the below screenshot. Sorry but I am not expert in drums input… You can check if you have the same results as shown in my screenshot, on your system. Sorry but I am not an expert in drum input, hopefully someone will help further:
Thank you Christian. I appreciate your time.
As a new comer to Dorico part of the challenge when something isn’t working is first to figure out what the issue is. I’m beginning to think that this is a matter of key assignment rather than midi mapping. I should be able to opt-Up arrow/down arrow between natural and playing technique instruments: I can’t do this and should be able to according to Anthony’s video

I’ve just posted on the Facebook group… Hopefully somebody out there can help me
