I’m new to Dorico, and also not well-versed in percussion/drum notation of any sort. Super fun combination… Anyway, I’m trying to replicate the measure below (ignore the ugly hand-drawn diagonal line) on a drum set staff, and am struggling to get it right:
I’m able to notate the kick drum part without issue, and after crawling through Dorico help docs and forum posts I was able to figure out create the up-stem dotted eighth note voice for the snare part, but the sixteenth/semi-quaver rests are still eluding me… Any help appreciated. Thank you!
So the issue is that you don’t know how to place the dotted 8th on the second 16th note of each beat?
Make sure your Grid Resolution is set to 16ths - check the bottom-right of your window (there is a key command for this) - and then just move the caret along to the correct 16th during Note Input. Dorico will automatically add the rest once the note is in.
I like changing it temporarily for editing to the mode where each part of the kit is on its own lime- it bypasses all the note head and rest details, and collapse it back to the five line form when you’re done. Basically I’m letting Dorico worry about it after
Thanks for showing me this menu, but after adjusting the settings I’m still not able to get what I’m after. You’re welcome to take a crack at my settings, maybe I’ve screwed something up that I’m not even aware of! Bar 92 is the spot I’m working on.
It’s a lot easier to work with for percussion & drum kits, and when you are finished you can return to grid or 5-line staff. Another bonus with single line instruments you can also add individual dynamics, in other words you could make your kick drums louder at f than your high-hats at mp, if you wanted. When you return to 5-line view, these individual dynamics will not be visible but fear not, they still exist under the hood if you return to single-line view!
