Drumline in Dorico

Hello I am a former finale user and I’m making the switch to Dorico. I really like the software, I write for Marching band and of Course there are limited options for drumline. I am now learning how to download templates and using midi keyboards and this is something I never explored using Finale. I don’t compose using a midi keyboard, I click in all of my notes. I purchased VDL Basi from Score Sauce, but I can’t get it to play back or make any sounds when I input note with a mouse. I believe now that I need to purchase Tapspace in order to use the template I have already purchased? Is that correct.
I am completely lost and very angry with finale lol
Please help me!

Hi Johnathan and welcome to the forum!
I admit I had no idea what Score Sauce was and I looked it up, it’s a template to use Tapspace’s VDL. So yes, you would need to buy that last product in order to use the first one, I would have thought those who sell it would make this really obvious to the clients (since VDL is not really cheap, 200€ last time I checked).
I would certainly encourage you to leave the mouse and use your computer keyboard (and a MIDI keyboard, especially when you need to input chords — otherwise, the computer keyboard is perfectly usable and fast!)
Rest assured we are a whole community ready to answer to your questions and help you find the most convenient workflow through Dorico.

Thank you. So, I now have tapspace, Kontak player 8 and the VDL template for Dorico. There is still no playback. What am I missing?

You might want to post diagnostic files (Help menu in Dorico). Because usually, simply applying a playback template of some VST instrument that is perfectly installed should work flawlessly.

One random thought. Does the VDL playback template perhaps expect Kontakt 7 (or earlier) as the endpoint? Check for exclamation marks against VSTs in Play.

Another thing to check is the exact instruments that the template is expecting. There might be some instruments that do not trigger that playback template… If so, it should be explicit in the Score Sauce user guide. Or if you’re using xml imports, do Change Instrument for each player to the same apparent instrument, this could solve routing problems under the hood…
