Very simple to describe the problem: I have slash regions in my score. I highlight a couple of beats in a slash region and press < to start a crescendo dynamic. Nothing happens. I also split that bar out using U; tried again; no hairpin. How do I create dynamic hairpins in slash regions?
Welcome to the forum!
If you want the same hairpin as you have on the notes in the screenshot, I would just select it and do Edit > Paste Special > Duplicate to Staff Above.
If you want a different hairpin, or you don’t have one to copy, you can add markings of all kinds at any rhythmic positions using the caret:
Thank you; the Paste Special command worked. I’m new to Dorico (coming over from Finale), so I’m still learning quite a bit. I would be curious to understand why the same command (the “<” key) works in some cases but not others … doesn’t seem logical to me, but as I said, I’m new here. Thanks so much for the help.
You can always input dynamics from the caret when eg in the middle of a tie chain or slash region.
Without the caret, but with notes selected, < adds a cresc. hairpin the length of the selection. This can even be on multiple staves at once, even at different rhythmic positions.
With the caret active, < appears to add a hairpin the length of the next note you enter. (I never tried this before!)
And obviously < in the popover is another set of behaviors.
