Greetings!
I’m having an issue with dynamics being placed on top of the staff in individual parts, but in the score, they are placed below the staff (as should be). This is for a 12-piece saxophone choir. Attached is an example of the issue.

When you are in a part, select all, filter dynamics, check out the properties. Is the position propery enabled (locally, I presume)?
We are really going to need to see the file. Did this originate in Dorico or is it an XML import? Sometimes XML imports will import a Tenor Sax as a Tenor Voice, which will of course have dynamics above. If that’s the case change the instrument to Tenor Sax (or Soprano, Alto, Bari, etc) and it should fix it. We’re just guessing without knowing the file history and seeing the file though.
It was imported, however, I had already updated the the instruments to reflect saxophones. If I need to go through and copy from this project and open a new one and past it, I can. That might actually help out a ton.
If you cut the project down to only a couple of bars that are demonstrating the issue, and post it, that would certainly help use sleuth it out. There are a ton of issues specific to XML import though, so it’s hard to know if it’s a Dorico issue, or an issue with whatever software you exported from.
Got it! Thanks so much!
Did you just update the names or did you actually change the players’ instruments? As Fred said, if the XML has fooled Dorico into treating the staves as vocal ones, just changing the names won’t help this.
My recommendation to MusicXML import data is to create a new project with the proper instrument and key / time signature specifications and copy the imported music into the new project. From my experience this fixes some of those import anomalies.
This will almost certainly be a matter of Alto Saxes coming through as Alto singers! Just changing the instrument in Setup will fix that.
I’ve got it setup as alto saxes in the setup. Is there anything else I need to do? As others have noted, I’m thinking next time I import, I’ll just copy the parts and paste them into a new project.
Did you change the actual instrument, or just the name? Dynamics above the staff (without overrides) are a sign of a voice instrument. You should be able to do this an easier way than copying to a new project (or even new instruments).
I changed the actual instrument. In playback, it’s playing as a saxophone.
