Dynamics wrong

The piano dynamics were completely wrong: I recorded a few bars and both the P525 and Garritan CFX had different dynamics; even the upper notes in the treble clef were louder than the bass clef. I tried various dynamics settings, including the “default” one, but the results were always terrible.

Try turning off Playback options>Dynamics>Humane>Polyphonic instrument voice balancing

I tried but it doesn’t work

I think you need to elaborate on what “completely wrong” and “always terrible” actually mean. Perhaps a small example that shows the issue.

Hi @Savius_Sos , please upload a Dorico project that presents this issue, so we can diagnose what is going on.

I mean, it doesn’t match what I played. I’ve done that with other software, and the problem didn’t occur. Dorico seems to offer endless possibilities, but the question is: Do they work properly?

Until now you didn’t describe in a detailed way what is the problem, nor you provided a Dorico file to diagnose it.

It’s like recording an audio file that sounds louder in the treble clef than in the bass clef. Why? There must be some algorithm misinterpreting the execution. For me, Dorico is certainly good for creating even complex scores. But its weaknesses lie in the playback-recording aspect.

If melody is in the upper notes in the treble clef, shouldn’t it to be expected to be louder than the accompaniment in bass clef?

If it is not in that case, please demonstrate the problem. I don’t personally agree with the humanized Piano playback in Dorico, but to be fair it should be judged specifically case by case.

A well-known example where the left hand sounds louder is Franz Liszt’s Liebestraum No. 3. Dorico messes up if you record it.

Maybe I have some wrong settings?

Maybe you could help us help you by providing a file?

We don’t like the guessing game around here too much

I solved it like this. Control Change 11 (continuous expression)

Thanks Jesele. But then I tried adding dynamics (e.g. ff or mf or pp) but they had no effect on the notes. I changed the playback model (I used to have SILENCE) to Halion and a mess happened: the piano notes sounded like vibrato or a noise gate. I’m going crazy!

I think you need to select all and do Play->Reset Playback Overrides. That will delete all the played dynamics. Maybe do it on a copy, in case you want your played dynamics back.

I had hoped I could record like any DAW, but that’s not the case… I rewrote the piece, adding the notes, and finally everything seems to work.
