So a request for the little introduction brackets just came up on another thread, and I realized I will actually have an upcoming project that will need a ton of these, so I decided to make a custom line to make it quick. You just select the range and add the custom line from the side panel:
You 'll need this dinky little font (literally just A and B for starting and ending brackets): IntroBrackets-Regular.otf.zip (1.2 KB)
and once you’ve installed the font, this Dorico file with the line in it, which you can “save as default” to make available in other projects: Intro bracket sample.dorico (1.5 MB)
Thank you so much for offering your help! Sadly, I have Dorico 5 & it tells me that the file was created with a later version & won’t register the font for me!
In response to your comment, I just restarted my computer & clicked OK to all of the warning messages, so now I guess I can continue to explore & see what happens! lol. thank you, Jesele!
OK, Dan- I restarted my computer & pushed OK to all of the warnings- So, please, what is the next step in capturing your special bracketed line & transferring it to become a part of my “permanent” system, or to a template file? I do so appreciate having someone to walk beside me in this! (& how to learn to access & apply it! - so far, every time I go to the help button, there are 100’s of potential articles to answer my query & I get overwhelmed!!! chat gpt has helped some, but is stumped by the ellipse-enclosed letter challenge, lol! ) I’m glad I remembered that there is this forum & human help is so generously available!
Hi Karen, open that Dorico file, select the line from the side panel, and click the pencil icon in that panel to open the editor. Then with that line selected, click the star button in the bottom left. That’s “Save as default” which makes the line appear in any project opened on your computer.
Thank you, Dan!
Perhaps because I have an earlier version of Dorico, the option does not exist.
Here is a screenshot of what I have on my screen when I select the brackets…
I hope you can direct me from this point- thank you sooo much!
Thank you! I missed the “pencil” step at 1st, but now continued on & selected the star. So- what is next to apply it to my own sheet music? I appreciate your patience!
Sadly, I do not have the intro bracket show up in the list of current or “new” documents. I had to enter substitute fonts for the missing minion pro, but “times new roman” did not allow it to appear at all, even with “squares” to show missing items as sometimes occurs with pasting things. Does Minion offer the angle-bracket shape whereas other fonts do not include it as a graphic option?
The brackets have nothing to do with Minion or Times New Roman. Minion is just the text font I was using for lyrics. Can you post a sample project here that you’re trying to get the line to appear in?
thank you Dan for your perseverance in working with me! Your shared bracket entry did not transfer into my Dorico 5. Last night, I had left everything as-is when the message came that there were missing fonts, so this morning I wondered if that had anything to do with the fact that it did not work, so then I entered times new roman, assuming that the missing fonts had something to do with how you accessed some process to create the bracket, & it still did not appear in the selection column of lines, so I do not know if there is some other non-transferrable process between Dorico versions. The sample you sent IS functional- I can choose & insert brackets on other measures. But, as of yet, despite being “starred”, it is not on my screen as an option to select.
Oh… I just went back & reread the original post you made & am reminded that you sent a font that needs to be installed- please backtrack with me & lead me through getting that font installed! (smoking gears in my brain need oil…!!!)
Me again- I researched & did steps to install it & it said it already was… shut down & rebooted anyhow, & found font manager & indeed it is there- but still no bracket in Dorico’s system. Then read that if something was not compatible, if you saved a copy of the project that the feature would be missing, but the copy still has your custom bracket, so perhaps that is a good sign & there is still just a missing puzzle piece to get it into the system.
Perhaps you couls walk me through the process of using the font you shared for me to re-create it on my own computer?
