Is it possible to edit a user-created Project Template? Now if I want to change something in a template I create a new file from the template, edit the file and then save that as a new template and delete the old one. Looking for a better way.
User Templates are just regular Dorico projects, stored in %APPDATA%\Steinberg\Dorico 5 on Windows or /Users/your-username/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 5 on macOS
Open them directly, edit, save.
Thatâs what I was looking for. Thank you, @pianoleo
I do a lot of work starting from a template, then when I finished the thing I realise that I have changed a lot of things to the better. Is it necessary to save as a template with the same name as the old one after taking out all the contents, or is there a better way?
Thatâs the best way to do it, yes: save your updated template with the same name as the existing one, and the existing one will be overwritten.
I get all the way to Dorico 5 and the file is empty. Iâm not seeing any TemplatesâŚmine or the default ones. What am I missing? I found Application Support, Steinberg, Dorico 5, and then the folder is empty.
Can you explain exactly what youâre trying to do, what youâre doing to make it happen, and what happens when you do it?
Normally, you save Project Templates in File > Save Project Template, and they should then be accessible from the File > New From Project Template.
Youâll only see project templates that youâve created (or purchased from third-party vendors) in that folder.
The factory templates are created on the fly; they donât exist as individual files in the way that custom templates do.
So if I took one of the included templates and modified it with my own title it doesnât appear there?
It should be, but I seem to make my changes and then save as a new template with the same title and for some weird reason my changes donât take and then Iâm in a circle thatâs driving me bonkers. I must say though, I am a Finale user for the last 30 yearsâŚliterally half of my life, and I was terrified to teach myself Dorico and for the most part itâs going very smoothly and I definitely see how much more powerful this program is. In my template I keep trying to get the copyright at the bottom to show up on only the first pageâŚsomething that was in your quartet template, but then I briefly changed it to be like I did it in Finale, and now Iâm changing my mind, but I made other changes and didnât want to start over modifying your quartet template. I absolutely KNOW I did something wrong but I canât seem to figure it out. Also I like the page numbers to all be on the upper right hand side, so justified to the right. This is because I read my music exclusively on iPad. Yet, my template keeps justifying the number to the left even though the number is on the right side of the page. Itâs probably not that importantâŚIâm a detail-oriented person and I need to get over it!
What exactly do you mean by âtaking one of the templates an modifying itâ?
You have to create a new file from this template, change whatever you want to change, and then save it again as template.
Exactly. I opened the quartet template. I removed the flow heading showing up in the template because I rarely use flows. I added âsubtitleâ under the âtitleâ âarrangerâ under the âcomposerâ and âquartetâ next to the part (add to âother infoâ because I make arrangements for quartet trio and duo). Then I took my new project called âuntitledâ and saved it as a template. I have NO idea where that template is stored. It seems like I made my own template but itâs not in that folder. I gave it the template the name âMHS quartetâ and put it in the âchamberâ part of the templates.
If the Dorico 5 folder is empty, youâre probably in the wrong Application Support.
Follow the instructions I gave at the top of the thread:
Itâs the Library folder for your username, not the global one for all users of the computer. (Yes, you might be the only user of the computer in question, but thatâs not how macOS sees it.)
No, itâs not that at all: the user Library is a hidden folder. From Finder, you can - from your user folder - go View > View Options and ensure that âShow Library Folderâ is ticked:
or you can go to the Go menu > Go to Folder⌠and then copy and paste (very carefully, including the crucial ~ at the start)
~/Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Dorico 5
then hit Return.
Oh my goshâŚI donât have my âuserâ house in my favorites, so I couldnât get there that way. I donât even know how to put the user house there. HOWEVER, your cut-and-paste option worked perfectly, and what do you know⌠my template is there! From there can I just open that template, make changes, save, and it will stay in that location?
You can also get there by choosing Go > Library while holding the Option key (otherwise it doesnât appear in the menu). The same menu also has Go > Home â§âH for your user folder.
