ELicenser 2025

Hi I know that in 2025 the elicenser service will end, I wanted to ask if I can continue to use my license even after 2025??
If before 2025 I install Cubase 9 on a new PC with Windows 11 will I be able to use my license??
And if with the updates after 2025 of Windows 11 if the elicenser software becomes too old?? how can we continue to use it since the elicenser service will be offline??

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, there is nothing stopping you from using your existing licenses.

You did not mention if you are using a USB eLicenser or the Soft eLicenser. The Soft eLicenser is basically a file stored somewhere on the disk of your computer, so if that computer is gone you can’t reactivte it.

If you are using the USB eLicenser you just connect the dongle to any computer, where your software is installed, and it will work.

Using the USB eLicenser that will also work after the shutdown in 2025. The eLicenser doesn’t need the server connection for starting Cubase.

The software will continue to enable your license. What you can not do is add or modify anything that is stored in your eLicenser, because for any change it requires the server connection. This connection will be gone and therefore changes are not possible anymore.

Please read the full documentation on this here.

You can continue using the applications that have been activated in the past on the elicencer, also after 2025. You can also reinstall these on the same computer or on another one if you want. The limitations you have is that after 2025 you won’t be able to upgrade to newer versions anymore . So you if want to upgrade you’ll have to buy the full version. And if the elicencer becomes defective you won’t be able to replace it with a new one because the server will be gone.

Hi@juergenP.

I wonder if you could shed a bit more light on this?

Just two days ago, I decided to visit an old DAW PC of mine (Windows 7, Cubase 8.5), but when I plugged in the eLicencer dongle and started Cubase, it warned “No valid license found”.

On opening the eLicencer Control Centre, that warned that “The eLicencer Dongle Data Base is out of date and needs to be updated”.

Any idea how one would get around this after the eLicencer server is taken down?

In this case you should make sure your eLicenser Control Center is up to date and execute the maintenance. This will make sure your dongle is synchronized with your Steinberg Profile.

It is not possible anymore after the service shutdown, that is what Steinberg has documented in the Support article.

Thank you for clarifying this, this is what I thought.

So basically, at any given time, we could lose all licenses after the 2025 take down, even though the Licences are actually still on the Dongle.

Many thanks.

Only if the dongle breaks or is lost.

You should update your products before the end of the eLicenser service.

But this is still no certainty that the eLicencer Software Centre will not require a DB update for the Dongle, at some stage, ie: a change of Hardware/Clean OS install etc.

In this case, the eLicencer dongle would be rendered useless, and previous versions of Steinberg software licenses on it, would be unaccessible, regardless of the fact that the Dongle is not broken.

Once there is a call to update the eLicencer dongle’s Data Base, unsupported Steinberg software, will no longer be able to access these licenses on the Dongle. This is the point that I wanted to understand fully.

If what I have assumed is correct, thank you for your time.

Prim.

Correct, that is what I wrote. Steinberg startet documenting it and actively informs users about the end of the eLicenser since beginning of this year.

Everything is clearly written Here

There is no mention in the article, that a required DB update will eventually render the eLicencer dongle redundant.

On the contrary, it tells you, that you can use the Dongle as long as it is not broken. This is not entirely as straight forward as that though, and can be a bit misleading.

But thank you again, I get it now.
