Enter a pick up measure

Hello everyone, how do I enter a quarter note pick up measure after I’ve already written 8 measures?
Thanks.

  • Select the first note
  • enter a quarter rest with Shift-B 1q
  • select the note after the rest
  • set time signature with Shift-M 4/4 (in my case)
  • hide the time signature in the properties

Better: Select the rest and set the time signature with Shift+M and then 4/4,1 or 3/4,1 (or whatever your time sig is – the important part is the ,1). Edit: Or just double click the time signature and enter the new time sig.

@derhannes Your method leaves you with a 4/4 initial bar that’s just missing three beats, which is different from a pickup bar with one quarter.

Interesting, didn’t know that!

Here’s my method, which to me is the most logical, just do it like in the little video. First you create the one extra beat, and then tell Dorico that the new beat should be contained in the pickup.

Cheers,
Benji

@Federico_Dominici ,

Do you want to add a note for a pickup or use the existing first note as pickup?

Let’s hope we’ll hear back from the OP… :wink: :+1:

I wanted to add a quarter pick-up note before the first measure I have already written…
