EQ dragging causes screen freeze after 5 secs of mouse click

When I drag EQ levels for more than 5 seconds the screen freezes and I have to let go of the mouse button so that I can continue adjusting rendering automation useless.

I have had this problem before but never found a solution or know how to word my search for help.
