[error or unexpected behaviour] MIDI channel is muted but still sending when recording

When I record from my hardware keyboards I want to record audio and MIDI at the the same time. When I start recording, the recorded MIDI data is immediately sent, so the keyboard gets the same input from me playing and over MIDI, what makes the velocity sound completely wrong. That’s not only messing up the audio signal I want to record along with the MIDI signal, it also makes it very hard to play.

Of course I did what seemed obvious and muted the MIDI track while I was recording, but it didn’t help. The only thing I could do was to unset the target of the MIDI channel.

Hi,

You can either set the MIDI Out to Not Connected, or you can set the Local Control to Off on your hardware, to don’t send the MIDI data to Cubase and to the synth engine (you would disconnect the synth engine, so the MIDI data would go thru Cubase only).

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the information.

I still think that this an error or at least unexpected behaviour that should be corrected. If a MIDI track is muted it shouldn’t send - even when recording on it.

If you want to record MIDI for an external keyboard (as output) it’s very often the best choice to use the the same keyboard as MIDI input (eg external synth supports poly aftertouch and it’s keyboard provides poly aftertouch).

Am I missing something? I can’t think of a reason for complicating the recording/listening workflow.

Hi,

The correct way is to switch the Local Control Off on your keyboard, to don’t send double-data out (to your DAW and to your synth).

I do appreciate your help, Martin. Still I have to say that I am not very happy with that situation.

And next time I want to just play the keyboard I have to change settings?

Does it help anyone, that a muted MIDI channel is sending when recording on it?

Hi,

In the Preferences > Record > MIDI, disable the Record-Enable allows MIDI Thru option.

Thank you very much for your help and your patience.

I just tested it and it’s what I wanted. Others might not care for it, but it will really help me a lot with my workflow.
