Diagnostic posted above, and here is a screenshot from this morning
Thanks for the new diagnostics data, and indeed you have a file permission issue.
All the files are there and in the right place but to the majority you have as a user no access rights.
In the diagnostics are the two files SMTGContents and SMTGContentsAccess.
If you look at SMTGContentsAccess you will find entries like e.g.
C:\ProgramData\Steinberg\Content\VST Sound\FCP_SMT_005_Reverence_ImpulseLibrary_04.vstsound NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(I)(F)
-
BUILTIN\Administrators:(I)(F)* -
BUILTIN\Users:(I)(RX)*

Successfully processed 0 files; Failed processing 1 files
Successfully processed 0 files; Failed processing 1 files

So you see, e.g. in the folder C:\ProgramData\Steinberg\Content\VST Sound you have access to the REVerence impulse response files, but not to the other files that are in the same folder. The script just says Failed Processing. That’s because it has not rights to access them as a normal user.
If you are not familiar with setting file permissions, we can arrange for a remote session. If that is the case please send a private message via the board and we’ll arrange for everything necessary.
Most likely, yes.
This is a school laptop, and it looks like I need admin password to change permissions. I’m going to contact our tech team and see if they can help me. I’ll update this thread and let you know how it goes.
Is this what you mean by permissions? The System and admin look the same as in this screenshot, here I am showing user, the user profile did not have all of these boxes checked origionally, so I checked them. It’s not making any difference, however. The diagnostic tool is still showing and error and I’m still getting the Dorico error on startup. Maybe there’s another way to do permissions?
But you did not change all other vstsound files as well, right? Every single vstsound file beneath C:\ProgramData\Steinberg\Content needs to have the same setting as FCP_SMT_753_GASE_Factory_SP.vstsound (shown in your screenshot)
Do you get my point?
I changed all the ones that were listed as failing in the SMTGContentsAccess. Maybe I misread that though, Do I change the one file that is listed, or everything in the whole folder? When I click on some of them to change permissions I get this:
Actually yes, you misinterpreted the file SMTGContentsAccess. The files that are listed with their name are the good ones, they have already the permissions that are needed. The failing ones don’t show up with their name, but they are the ones that need to be changed.
I suppose it is a good idea to talk to an administrator to get that all done properly.
I think I got it worked out. Changed permissions on all those files and it’s working now.
Ok, I am one of those Mac Users.
What is the exact default location for Content HALion Sonic 3? The installer wants to use my Downloads folder and that’s not right. Every attempt to select a different directory results in
Even when I allow it to go to the Downloads folder and register it in the Library Manager, I get this when opening Dorico 5.1.0 on my M2 Mac Studio over Sonoma 14.3
I had a remote session with Mike and we settled everything.
That we did. Additional update have had small hickups but nothing I couldn’t handle.
Thanks again for your help!
I am having the same issue described in this thread. I have installed Dorico Pro 5 on a second device (it’s working ok the first device) and it’s coming up with the same message about a missing ‘essential component’ (see below). I am unable to get past even the first step described in the discussion - to double click on the VST instrument under HAlion Sonic Factory Content so I can select the default path. When I click on any of the instruments, it doesn’t open up with further other options. Thanks for any advice.
Hi @Johanna_Selleck ,
please choose from Dorico’s menu Help > Create Diagnostic Report and attach the corresponding zip file to a reply here. This gives me a first overview and then I can come up with more advice.
Also, please open the Steinberg Download Assistant and take a screenshot of the program window when the Dorico section is open.
Thanks

Thanks so much for your help. I have attached both as you asked. I should add I am transferring this license to a new laptop, so I deactivated the license for original laptop. Could this have caused an issue with permissions? Thanks again.
Hi @Johanna_Selleck , thanks for the data.
So HALion Sonic 7 and Groove Agent are installed, but somehow the vstscanning is falling over with them. So please do the following:
- Run Dorico and choose from the menu Edit > Preferences.
- Choose on the left the Vst3 plug-ins tab and scroll all the way down.
- There is a button called Clear Audio Engine Cache.
- Click that button and restart Dorico
Is then still that alert dialog popping up?
Many thanks Ulf. I think I tried that but will do it again…
I ran the ‘clear audio cache’ but it’s still not working. But another message popped up saying that the ‘Smart App’ for Windows 11 is blocking some Steinberg components. So I removed the Smart App from the computer and restarted but still no luck. Another message also appeared saying ‘no valid license detected for Symphonic Orchestra’.
