Exact text position (e.g. from page edge)

Hello, Finale refugee here.
Is there a way to set specific vertical or horizontal text position, e.g. 1 inch from upper page edge. It was easy in Finale (I did it with guide lines) and can’t find a way to replicate it in Dorico. Please help.

If the text is not tied to the music I would say: make a text frame in Engrave Mode. Highly customizable.

Thank you @meixner . I checked the site, but I couldn’t find an answer to my question. I know it’s possible to have full control over font size, etc. within a text frame, but I still can’t find an option to set the exact position of the text on a page. I draw a frame, add text, and see no control over its exact position. To me, it seems quite random. Am I correct?

No, there are complete controls, but you have to find them. This page of the documentation is more pertinent:

"Thank you, @Mark_Johnson. I found more information under the ‘inputting frames’ link. I’m now trying to replicate in Dorico my templates from Finale, where the TITLE is positioned 1 inch from the page edge. My workflow is:

  • Page margin set to 0.5 inch
  • Frame size set to 0.5 inch
  • Text vertical alignment within the frame set to ‘Bottom’

obraz

The result: the text isn’t aligned with the bottom edge of the frame because the total vertical font size must fit within the frame. When I examine the PDF and measure the distance, it’s 0.92 inch. To achieve exactly 1 inch, I have to add 0.08 inch to the frame size. And that’s it.

My question: Is there an easier way to do this? When I change the font, the distance changes as well, so maintaining precision is difficult. Something like ‘guide lines’ in Finale, which would also help align different objects on the page, would be very useful.

Hi @paolopiano, I don’t know if my suggestion is correct from a technical point of view, but if I set the Baseline of the Token to -5 (editing the First page Template for example), the text is aligned with the bottom of the Frame, maybe you can try to see if this is in the direction that you need (but yes, changing the Font will require a base line adjustment), otherwise I am sure some experts will suggest something better…:

Dorico file example:
title aligned with bottom edge of frame.dorico (526.2 KB)

Thank you, @Christian_R. That will definitely help when I need to align the title text with the bottom of the frame.

Are you aware that one can set the vertical alignment of a text frame in the Properties panel?

@Derrek, as I understend, it is Vertical alignment of text within the frame, not the text frame alone. Yes, I mentioned it earlier.
