Excessive labels for every note when condensing?

While condensing horns on a project, I ran into quite a wacky amount of labels for what is otherwise a very simple accompaniment part (only two voices, the top horns and lower horns both in respective unison).

I don’t really understand why the labels are there, let alone repeated for every single note - I don’t need that since I have my engrave staff label settings to “consider stem allocation” so it’s clear on the left-hand side. Nonetheless, I dug around in all the condensing choices in the Notation Options and Condensing Change menus and couldn’t figure out anything which allows me to get rid of them. Also not shown but I had tried various pairings (1+3, 1+2, etc) and stem arrangements but nothing worked.

Also I had to force a condensing change for this project, to make Horn 4 sit on the same staff as with Horn 3 (they are both in unison here), otherwise Dorico was creating a separate staff just for Horn 4.

Attached is a snippet from that project of these horns if anyone can help me. Thank you!

Without having looked at your project, generally Dorico labels more frequently when you’ve forced condensing manually.

That is quite an impressive amount though!

If you can try to jiggle the setup to avoid needing a manual condensing change, that should in theory improve the situation. Have you made a condensing group for the layout that includes all 4 horns, and checked Notation Options for defaults first?

Normally I try not to do a manual condensing change unless absolutely necessary – but I’ve been quite confused as to why horns 4 aren’t allowed in with the others, since it’s literally duplicated from horns 3 at unison (and I think I copy/pasted it quite literally so it has all the same dynamics etc)!

But to be sure, I deleted the doubled pair of each horns (so 2 & 4) and then re-pasted from 1 & 3, then also removed the manual condensing change and reset the notation options to factory. Interestingly, for the first system, horns 4 still gets silo’ed off on its own, but in the second system they become happily condensed!

I can’t figure why since horns 4 is literally the exact same as horns 3… I also tried again pairing 2 & 4 instead, no improvement there.

Try adding this in Layout Options > Players > Condensing.

One error is that Horn 1 lacks the initial mf dynamic. Add that and all 4 horns happily condense to a single staff.

Doh! :man_facepalming: And I normally have really good “doubling hygiene” in terms of watching out for consistent dynamics while I work, for easy condensing later on. I guess not this time, as I totally missed that one. Thanks for your help!
