In fact, I would only wish to distribute any music to friends or to upload to a streaming service or YouTube, if that was possible. Would MP3 be suitable for that, as you say that the filesize would be considerably smaller? It’s most unlikely that I would be sending to a mastering engineer.

MP3 could be suitable. It won’t give you quite the same fidelity as a .wav file. It depends a bit on what the audio material is. I would strongly suggest you bump up the bitrate of the MP3 to 320kbps.

VST of the piano, whereas the Render in Place seems to have already used the piano’s VST.

As far as I understood it, you are not using any VSTi’s. (Virtual Studio Technology - instrument, i.e. a software synth.)

For the WAV files, I’ll try gradually increasing the Bit Rate and Sample Rate making sure that I don’t get the error message about the CPU overload. Would that also depend on the length of the track being processed for the Mixdown?

What would?
The length of your composition alone should not be a factor when it comes CPU utilization.
