My expression maps are correctly set up to trigger a sustained expressive sound for the cello on my vst Opus. I have double and triple checked the expression maps and end points, but cannot see any fault.
Yet on the score (below), where I have written the expression I want my cello to play, the green bar clearly shows that it is stuck on Spiccato, even though it should play the expression “Expressif” (which I have defined and that normally works fine).
What is the solution? Many thanks.
Is there a spiccato anywhere before legato? If you hover over the blue circled Legato, does it show Legato + Spiccato? It says Base switch: Spiccato, so that is probably what is being played. You need to find the last spiccato and make sure it is cancelled with ‘ord’ or ‘nat’.
yes-- basically if spiccato and Expressif are not in mutual exclusion groups then there is always the possibility that Dorico is simply adding your Expressiv to spiccato. As you say it most commonly worked OK, I assume that previously it followed a different p.t or you had explicitly written ord to ensure the previous one was cancelled.
I had always assumed that changing the expression would cancel the previous one, but seemingly not so. I’ll try adding Natural too and see what happens.
Well, I’ll have a go and add Nat, because yes I did use spiccato previously.
Add just like magic, adding a “Natural” expression, has cancelled the previous expression, in order to allow the next expression to work correctly. Thank you both @derAbgang and @dko22 for your help. Solved
This is true if the two are in a mutual exclusion group that you define in the expression map.
sometimes you may want to add an expression to one you’ve already used for a compound technique. That’s why there is the option of mutual exclusions to ensure things behave the way you want!
