Expression Pedal... How to

Hello. I have an expression pedal connected via USB. On the midi monitor, it shows activity CC#11 0-127 and you can see the level graphic move in the footer.

How do I route this via a layer to either an external synth or plug in? I know it is probably straight forward but I have limited experience. Thanks.

Hi! Do I get it right, this EXPR pedal is not controlling your MIDI-keyboard directly, but sends signal on USB port, right? So you need to merge the two different signal sources (MIDIkeyb & USBexpr)?

Hi. Yes, that’s right. I thought the USB expression pedal could be used for different things depending on how it was set up in a layer.

For example, on one song, it could actually be used as an expression pedal for the Nord organ. On another, it could be a volume pedal for a VST synth. Maybe I’m too ambitious?

Regards, Tim

No saying, just need to merge the two signals…
Maybe others will have another idea, but I would create 3 layers:

  • Layer 1 MIDI synth, → VirtualMIDI#1
  • Layer 2 USBexpr → VirtualMIDI#1
  • Layer 3 : VSTinstrument ← VritualMIDI#1

OK. Virtual midi ports are something I need to get my head around given my limited experience so this will be a good opportunity to learn.

Thanks for your prompt support!

Hey man,

Workaround for controlling same VST from two different midi sources is possible with shared layers.

In the same part copy the layer and paste shared in the same part. So you’ll get two layers connected to the same VST in the same part. then choose the midi ports accordingly.

I’m not sure if this is a feature or a bug but it works  At the end you’ll get poor mans midi routing out of it.

I don’t think this works for external synths though. Needs to be checked.

Another workaround, which also works with external synths, is to create two layers, each with one of the controllers as the input and the same virtual MIDI port as the output. A third layer then uses this virtual MIDI port as the input and the external synth (or a VST instrument) as the output.
