External hardware + SSL 12+ Interface: MIDI Setup Issue in Cubase Pro

Hi everyone,

I’m running Windows 11 Pro with Cubase Pro 13 and 14. I also use an SSL 12+ interface and a Novation Bass Station II hardware synth, which is connected via USB cable.

My goal is to use the Bass Station II like a virtual instrument (e.g., Phase Plant or Serum), where the MIDI data triggers the synth, and I can record and play MIDI tracks without printing audio files.

Here’s the issue:

  • Cubase detects and registers MIDI input from the Bass Station II.
  • However, there is no sound output when I play back the MIDI tracks or trigger the synth.

I followed the steps in this video (timestamp 4:19): YouTube Link. The creator uses an external instrument setup in Cubase and assigns reroute channels to link the synth and interface.

Unfortunately, in my setup with SSL 12+, the reroute channel options don’t work as expected. I’ve attached a screenshot showing the external instrument configuration I tried in Cubase (please refer to the “Return Bus” settings). I’ve tried all loopback, nothing else make sense since the analogs is with instrument kabel or for microphones. ADAT Don’t make any sense either.

Has anyone successfully set up a Bass Station II with Cubase using only a USB connection for MIDI? How should I configure the SSL 12+ to make this work?

I appreciate any help or suggestions!

Thanks in advance!

Is your Bass Station’s audio outputs connected to your audio interface?

Hi.

I’ve tried to use an instrument cable from Bass Station out to my instrument in on my SSL 12+ interface. Then I get sound, but the sound don’t play through MIDI in cubase, but rather when I play on the actual Bass Station.

I know how to print the audio direct in Cubase, but this I don’t want. I want to use my Bass Station as an VST instrument.
The issue is that, when I press F4 in cubase to set it up. I also have to choose return channel and that’s my issue now.

Sorry for my rusty english.
An External Instrument combines Midi and Audio for your hardware instrument.
You need an audio cable to connect your synth to the input of your interface.
The return channel must be the input where your Bass Station is connected to.
