External MIDI device track MIDI channel is not set to the MIDI device identical channel

I’ve recently returned to Cubase (15 Pro) after many, many years, and I’m trying to set up my external synths, so I can just drag them in and have a track that works. I’ve spent several hours reading the manual, watching videos and pulling my hair out; so I think it’s time to ask for help.

My DeepMind 12 receives MIDI on ch 2. So when I create midi device I deselect all identical channels and just select ch 2. The synth is connected to my Kontrol S mk3 with 5 pin din, so I select Kontrol MIDI out 3 Kontrol.

Now, if I create a new instrument track and select the DeepMind, it doesn’t receive any midi. If I open the track inspector, the midi is set to channel 1, and I have to manually change it to “DeepMind MIDI” that I setup in midi devices. It defies logic. What am I doing wrong?

Hello and welcome back.

From my admittedly rudimentary knowledge of MIDI Devices I’d say that there is no way to have the MIDI Device itself to allow operations only on midi channel 2. You can create remote control panels in the device that will send their data only to channel 2 but otherwise the track channel setting is resonsible to get the data to channel 2.
I think you’ll have to keep making the choice on the track itself. You could, however, consider to save a track with all the right settings as a track preset and recall this preset in the future.
