External Storage

I use Cubase and Dorico and all the virtual instruments take up space. I have absolute and that already 130 gb of storage and I need my computer for other things too. Am I able to copy all of the sounds to an external hard drive and use that to store it or does it have to be on the same system as cubase or dorico. Or should I offload cubase and dorico to the hard drive too. I use a macbook M1 with 256 gigs of ram.

One can move the sound files to another location, in your case an external drive, using the Steinberg Library manager. I keep the basic Dorico and Cubase on my boot drive and have all the sounds on a separate SSD.

im thinking of doing the same. Are there an performance issues if all of your plugins midi instruments are stored on an external hard drive?

Most VSTs “pre-load” the samples into memory (and that’s why libraries need lots of RAM); or use some buffering at least, so you’re not relying on real-time ‘streaming’ from the disk. In any case, audio is relatively low-bandwidth these days on SSDs.
