I have an odd issue that I can’t quite figure out and would appreciate some insights. I have a project in Finale that I imported over via MusicXML. Almost everything has worked beautifully, except the measure pictured here. There is a phantom 5th beat to this measure that I can’t delete. It appears on playback; I can also add an extra quarter note rest to the measure. Changing the time signature doesn’t fix it. Using the popover through Shift-B, -q moves the first beat of the next measure over and doesn’t correct the problem. Deleting the bar entirely and inserting a new one just shifts the flag over a measure and doesn’t clear it. Any insights as to how to remove the phantom fifth beat?
Hi @mdsteele47, and welcome to the Forum.
Please upload your Dorico Project here for instant advices.
(You can most probably correct this, setting the Insert Mode in Global Adjustment of current bar scope, and delete the quarter rest that you can add, as you said. Probably there are also some removed rests going on, providing the file gives us an immediate grasp of the situation)
Thanks Christian. The Dorico file is too large to attach so I’ve uploaded the MXL file that I imported. Measure 46 is the problematic one.

When I delete the ‘,5’ in that box, though, it changes measure 47 to 3 beats and shifts everything that follows.
I tried selecting the extra beat in the measure within Insert Mode and clicking the trash icon (see screen shot) and the measure still retains 5 beats, just the subsequent bars shift left.
Maybe if you put a new 4/4 in bar 47. Then delete the one in bar 46.
Then you have an extra bar that you can delete. And finally, delete the 4/4 you added.

Hi @mdsteele47, here a similar workflow as the one illustrated by @jesele.
- delete the TS signpost
- activate Insert Mode in Global scope
- delete the quarter rest
- deactivate insert mode!
- correct if something is being cutting out (the eight upbeat)
Hm, I tried that but couldn’t get it to work. It was probably an error on my behalf.

Thank you so much! I did it a little bit differently but your video got me where I needed to be.
I added a quarter note in the phantom 5th beat of measure 46.
I deleted the TS signpost. This moved everything from measure 47 to 3 beats except for the top staff where I inserted the quarter.
I then did a global insert deletion of the quarter.
All the music properly situated back on the right beats from measure 47 on.
It might be interesting to see your bar 46 in the Finale environment. There might be some weird patch or workaround that transported over via the xml file.
