I use the 3D Frequency Analysis multiple times a day. It is an extremely useful tool. Having said that, I thought i would throw out some additions that I believe would genuinely amplify its utility.
Larger labels on the axes (or user selectable sizing) - they are really tiny even on a 43” 4k monitor
More axes labels (or user selectable amounts of frequencies and or times)
The ability to change the frequency scaling (for example linear vs graded)
Mouseover Tool Tips that indicate time and frequency at the cursor location
Self-Indulgent Dream Feature 1: Slicing by Freq or Time (to be able to view only that slice and nudge back and forth through the selected unit)
Self-indulgent Dream Feature 2: Overlay File Comparisons - the ability to have 2 different renders of the same project or 2 different projects entirely viewed simultaneously overlayed in the window with the requisite amount of transparency.
Granted, the latter 2 suggestions are a bit more difficult to incorporate and thus ‘nice-to-have’ but you don’t know unless you ask.
Being able to see the frequency distribution over the course of the entire piece of audio at once provides context for concentration of energies at various times as well as being able to clearly see production actions/decisions. A simple but useful example: the characteristics of low pass filters show up well. I’ve been using spectral views for around 15 years and they are great for a number of activities but the 2D view of using hue and saturation to depict the audio is inadequate for seeing the nuances of gain the way the 3D view does.
I primarily use the tool when I’m listening to a piece of audio prior to working on it and taking notes from the listening as well as observations from the meters and other visual tools. It very quickly provides information about the audio is extremely valuable in an assessment.
Upon further consideration of potential changes to the graph I would edit my prior post a bit
Larger axis labels
Larger number of axis labels (ideally regularly spaced)
Straight line linear axes
Labeling of Frequency, Time, and dB values at cursor position whether by a tracking crosshair cursor or just mouseover tool tips.
Increase resolution some - of course it would be too busy if it went too high but it would benefit from an increase
Linear and Log options for levels
RETRACTION - slicing by time and frequency and graph overlays - while useful at times they are not things that would be used constantly - the other suggestions would greatly benefit normal daily workflow.
