I’ve seen this topic pop up from time to time, so here comes my feature request ![]()
I’m working on a songbook (±150 songs). The number of verses per song is quite different and sometimes they lyrics should be under the score, sometimes in textboxes below the score.
As moving the lyrics from the score to textboxes is quite tedious and shifts all subsequent flows/pages I think it would be a great feature if Dorico would provide a frame type "Lyric-Box”.
The lyrics box could then be placed in a “flow footer” layout section (similar to flow header, but added below the flow) so that it moves subsequent flows/pages properly.
A layout option for lyrics could then determine how many verses should be right in the score and which verses should go into the lyrics frame(s). This would allow changing the layout easily. Right now it is quite time consuming to move the lyrics manually.
This would greatly improve the ability to create songbooks with Dorico.
You mean to ‘store’ lyrics as
hal-le-lu-jah…
and then let Dorico decide if to lay it out on a lyrics line (to the music) or present it as
hallelujah…
in a ‘flow footer’ box with ‘normal text’? It is an interesting idea.
For now, I would use a DTP program; there are currently more options available, such as an automated verse index, etc.
Right Click > Lyrics > Edit Line of Lyrics. You can then copy the whole verse to a text editor, where you can find/replace the hyphens, and then copy-paste to a text frame.
Thanks for the tip, this is very helpful!
But anyway: Flow footer and lyric boxes would be so cool to be able to automatically adjust the layout. As it is not yet clear, how many verses will be in the score and may change while going back and forth with the editors etc. it would be so much easier and faster…
Yes, exactly. I mean if I enter the lyrics to the score, Dorico should magically remember the positioning when moving it to a lyrics box optionally. So that it can then be specified (perhaps per flow) how many verses to include or put into the box below the score.
