Feature request: pedal line start that displays as a complete pedal change

Would it be possible to add an option for a pedal line to begin with the appearance of a complete pedal change?

When pedaling remains the same for several bars, the editor will often request ped. simile and omit the pedal lines until the pattern changes. At that point, a short line leading to a pedal change is used to show that the pedaling continues from the earlier pedal lines.

When this occurs at the beginning of a system, however, I currently have to use one of two workarounds:

  • Start the pedal line in the previous system and hide the unwanted section of the line in a staff line; or
  • Place the pedal change immediately after the downbeat and manually move it back into position.

Neither solution is ideal, since manual positioning can change inadvertently during later edits.

A dedicated “pedal line start” option that displays the start as a complete pedal change would avoid these workarounds and make this situation much easier to handle.

Hi @gplumblee, another, possibly comfortable, workaround would be to substitute the Right pedal pictogram with a retake glyph [edit: see the EDIT below for a better glyph]…

… then change this Engraving option to zero out the gap…

…and set Symbol as Sign appearance in the properties of that segment:

Result:

Dorico file example:

fake retake after sim. pedal line.dorico (1.3 MB)

EDIT: I see that the used glyph is a bit taller than normal. There is the possibility of creating a graphic using the graphic slice of an existing retake, exported as SVG. Shortly I try to post this alternative …

Here an updated version of the file:

fake retake after sim. pedal line-V2.dorico (1.3 MB)

I used an SVG obtained with a graphic slice of a retake.
Here the SVG that you can import (after unzipping):
fake retake.svg.zip (1.1 KB)

You need possibly to use negative values for the gap engraving option.

Result V2:

Thank you. I’ll give that a try. I had tried the glyph, but I forgot about creating a graphic.

Engrave mode>Graphic Slices tool:

This works, Christian. I had to tweak the vector file a little. I’m attaching my .svg file here.

fake retake.svg.zip (1.2 KB)

Glad to help, @gplumblee.

Yes, the SVG should be cropped exactly (I edited it in Inkscape, as I cannot understand how Affinity(Vector) works for such things)

(probably my first reply has more explanation related to your original request then my second reply, for the solution checkmark)
