I’m going through an older score of mine, trying to incorporate many of the helpful suggestions that the Dorico 6’s proofreader gives me. There are two things that I’d like to see added:
-
Showing categories for suggestions
Filtering suggestions by category is great. However, as far as I can tell, the suggestions themselves don’t display which category they belong to — apart from the colored bar, whose meaning isn’t explained anywhere.
It would feel intuitive if the category filter dropdown also showed the corresponding colors, or if each suggestion had a right-click context menu option to hide or filter out that type of suggestion directly. -
Difficulty levels based on player proficiency
Having suggestions tailored to the proficiency of musicians would be fantastic.
For example, Dorico warns me that a low C is difficult to play on baritone saxophone. That’s true for beginners, but if I’m writing for a professional big band, the musician will have no problem with it.
Conversely, if I’m writing for a youth orchestra, it would be helpful to know that the low D♭-E♭ is hard to trill on clarinet, or what a comfortable range for an amateur trombone player is.
I realize this second idea raises its own challenges; most notably, defining what “difficult to play” actually means. But even if the responsibility ultimately remains with the arranger, having Dorico highlight such passages based on a selected proficiency level would make it much easier to spot potential issues at a glance.
