Feature Requests VST Live Mods App

Hi at all VST Live Mods App users

I would like to start a post in the forum with suggestions for improvements specifically related to the Live Mods App.

’ll try to describe the functions with examples / use cases so that you can imagine what the function is needed for.

Multiple lyrics modules
It would be extremely helpful if there were several lyrics modules in VST-Live. Each band member should have their own lyrics module to be able to enter the lyrics and other additions individually.

Our drummer, for example, would like to note the current position in the song including a few keywords from the lyrics for orientation.
It would look like this, for example:
Bar 1: Intro 1/4 (A-Git only)
Bar 2: Intro 2/4 (A-git only)
Bar 3: Intro 3/4 (A-git only)
Bar 4: Intro 4/4 (A-git only)
Bar 5: Verse 1 beginning “I wanna…” (BD+Hihat only)

The bass player, for example, only needs a view with the lyrics and the chords.

A guitarist (electric guitar) would also like to display the lyrics with the chords (in standard tuning)

Another guitarist (electric guitar) would also like to display the lyrics with the chords, but these only need to be transposed for this guitarist (he does not play guitar in E standard tuning but in D standard).

When a band member starts VST Live Mods, it should be possible to select his own lyrics section so that it is displayed.

Formatting options in the Lyrics module
For band members who sing background vocals, it would be very helpful to be able to format the lyrics.
For example, it should be possible to mark individual words in color or in bold. For example, the second or third voice is not sung permanently in a verse, but only on individual words. These could therefore be highlighted.

Status display of the connected devices
In VST Live, you can see the number of connected devices at the bottom left. This should also be displayed in the VST Live Mod app. This allows the band members to see if someone is not connected. The connection could be checked with a kind of heartbeat signal.

Start/stop buttons in the app
We currently use a USB footswitch that the drummer operates to start the next song. The USB footswitch simulates pressing the space bar on the computer. This allows the song to be started or canceled. Please consider the following: If, for example, I switch to another software on the Mac so that VST Live is not the active window, the start/stop function does not work. It would therefore be great if the VST Live Mods could send the start/stop command in the background so that it also reaches VST Live.
I would offer two options for the user in VST Live. Firstly, “normal” buttons that you have to press and secondly, a way to prevent accidental start/stop. Here I could imagine that you have to keep the button pressed for 2 seconds, for example, or a kind of “swipe” function (like the iPhone display could be unlocked on old devices in the past, for example).
The function should only be available to selected connected devices with the Live Mods app, not to everyone.

Rotatable view
Would it be possible to use portrait mode as well as landscape? It is extremely helpful for some texts.

Visual metronome
It would be super helpful if the visual metronome (already available in VST Live) were also available in the VST Live Mods app. This would be conceivable as a line above or below the lyrics window. For example, 5-10% of the screen height or 10% of the screen width. Another view option would be to place a colored frame around the app that flashes in time. For example, beat 1 = red… beat 2, 3, 4 = blue

Individual zoom settings
In the VST Live Mods app, it should be possible for each app user to make individual zoom settings for each song. These should also be saved centrally in the VST Live app. It would also be conceivable to save additional settings in the VST Live app if a replacement device needs to be used.
A suitable zoom setting for all devices does not work. On my 12.9’’ iPad-Pro, the zoom setting works perfectly. On the 10.5’’ iPad, for example, the lines are cut off and the limits for the zoom range are not sufficient.

Self-configurable midi buttons in the VST-Live app
Nowadays, many devices are Midi-capable. For example, we run Daslight 5 in parallel to VST-Live to program a lightshow that is synchronized and adapted to the song. When we start a song, we send a midi command to Daslight 5 via the IAC driver on the MAC. In Daslight 5, this midi command starts the timeline with the same song. This works perfectly.
However, some of our songs do not have a fixed end. The end depends on how long the drummer plays the ending. For this purpose, we have programmed a strobe in the time line of the lightshow, for example, which is directed at the drummer and runs for 2 minutes. Once the song is over, a blackout must be switched on manually and, for example, the front light for moderation must be switched on again.
It would be extremely helpful if midi buttons could be configured in the VST Live Mods app (e.g. note on/off, CC commands, program changes) to be able to perform such tasks. Another scenario would be, for example, to switch the reverb on or off via midi command during moderation.

Status bar - next song
What is absolutely necessary is a status bar that shows the title of the next song!

I hope you can follow my explanations. Please just ask if anything is not clear. These suggestions are based on practical experience and came to our attention during the preparations for our live show.

Hi! Do you know that NOTES are jumping to timestamps too? So literally it is possible with some other way

Requested here long time ago, not just next, but prev - curr - next. We were informed its on their list

Actually TRANSPORT features were hiddenly active in a few versions before, but developers removed for now… it caused us some issue (you can find the topic), so probably they will polish it first

… yes, that’s a good one. It’s already on our list and we’ll see when we can add that.

… that’s already requested.

… it sounds that all those color coding will be done by VST Live and ported to the VST Live MODS, right? Or should the MODS also be able to color code those events?

… why?

… what? Really? We’ll check. Mac or Windows?

… we’ll check. Thank you.

… hm? There is a “METRONOME” module in the VST Live MODS, no?

… we are thinking that it is possible to show more then one module. Like : Select Metronome and Lyrics at the same time.

… nice. I guess VST Live user would like to have that one, too?

… yes, that’s interestingly. We’ll think about it!

… that’s a big step. But Connected Users must have then an Identifier. Anyway. A very good request.

… very cool!

… yes! Give a us bit to think about it.

… I totally agree to that one.

… absolutely. Thank you very much for your detailed feedback!

Now we need time to get everything’s done
Michael.

That is a very important feature

Yes, all should be created in VST-Live

The drummer (who starts the playback) can see if a band member has any issues with the tablet connection to VST Live. So it prevents show issues.

Mac → I had to do some modifications in Daslight and switched to the app. Then our drummer tried to start the backing tracks with a footswitch (which emulates the space bar). VST Live was not in focus so therefore it don’t started.

Yes, but you can only view on module.

Please implement it. And think about my suggestion of blending in the metronome like a frame “around” the app.

Yes, frame on the border of the lyrics window.

With VST live you can replace a person for lighting or other things. If you can implement midi buttons it would be possible to send e.g. commands for blackout, frontlight, reverb of during the songs (moderation) from an iPad.
Or the guitar player is able to control the sounds of his Kemper which is rack mounted via iPad.

Sure, VST Live cannot get the emulated key because it does not have the focus.
A MIDI pedal would not suffer from this.

Sure, and…?
Oh, you probably expect to hear it? Sorry, VST Live Mods does not output any audio.

More remote actions are in the making.
