Fermata over rests

How do I place a pause over specific rests? Apologies but I’ve done it before but i cannot remember how I did it. What I’m trying to achieve is this

I’ve tried adding note values then deleting them so I get the the rests but as soon as delete the last crotchet it turns into a whole bar rest.

You need to enter the rests as explicit rests. Start note entry, Force duration (o), enter the rest durations.

Shift-N (note input)

Comma (rest)

o (force duration)

7 (half note)

Y (enter rest)

6 (quarter note)

YY (2 rests)

I’ve got it but where on earth would typing “Y” or “YY” have anything at all to do with rests?

You may use A-G too

Press Y or any of the letters from A to G.

Thanks I had a feeling it was something to do with force duration and I remember I had done it a while back but for the life of me I couldn’t work out how I achieved it. I kept thinking if i deleted a note it turned into a rest so therefore if I added a minim and 2 crotchets then deleted them I would have the equivalent in rests and add the fermata to the last rest but the bar reverted back to a whole rest.

You don’t have to enter all the rests. Turn on Force Duration, enter the last quarter rest, apply the fermata.

The key Y (unlike A–G) represents the unspecifed pitch also being used conveniently for unpitched percussion.

Thanks all for your help normally I wouldn’t need to be so precise where the pause is placed, but in this piece I need to direct the band from the trumpet chair and the saxes have a run down to the last beat. I’ve cheated a bit by mapping out my own key command to invoke a rest which if I need it again I would probably easily remember.

Once again thanks for the help

Then putting the fermata on 4 is the right thing to do, regardless of where you’re conducting from!
