I’m on Nuendo 14, Win 11 trying to split a stereo mix. It’s a jazz instrumental and I successfully separated the drums bass and keys. But I can’t get the guitar track out of the keyboard tracks, which is critical. If I can’t separate those two, I’m rebuilding this thing from scratch, requiring tempo maps and a ton of extra tracks.
I was following the instructions on the Tutorials regarding Layer Remnents and how you could lasso a part, use the cut edit special tab and send that layer to the actual track it belonged on. But when I ran that process, I got error messages saying what I had lassoed wasn’t a layer.
I thought the issue was that it was on a soloed instrument inside SL12. So I unsoloed it and tried again, only to be told that I was selecting a group. So, what am I supposed to do?
I tried exporting the track with the keys & guitar hoping to run the unmix process on that specific track. The results was a track with wavefiles and no sound at all. And after all of that effort N14 CRASHED.
Can any of you power users tell me how to 1) Identify a Layer to the app’s satisfaction? and 2) Tell me how to get those guitar tracks AWAY from all of the keyboards?
Several Times. I finally got Layer Edits to work, though it was pretty much hit or miss for having the process accept my selections as layers. Those edits alone has taken the file size to OVER 2 GIGS and I haven’t even added the additional support tracks and started mixing! This app is a serious resource hog!
I opened a new project and imported all of the rendered SL tracks into it. The file size is down to a few MBs now! However, several expected tracks didn’t show up in the audio folder. So, I assume that they’re still inside of the SL12 environment.
The question now is, whether to start the process again in this folder to see if I can finally split out the guitar tracks and, IF that works, do another export for the actual rebuild and mix.
An answer you won’t be delighted to read: Quit on SL and use an online service like Lalal.ai for the task. By definition their algorithms are much more up-to-date than the ones used in an app that runs locally on your machine.
Just did a search. Not all all comfortable with their environment. Lots of 2 star reviews on the nickel and diming users on the minutes allotments and downloading issues, which means THEY HAVE YOUR WORK and you have copies of that work. That’s a no for me.
Of course I see your point, but the results are breathtaking. Better than anything I was able to achieve with RX or SL - by far. I use it since about three years now with zero issues.
But of course there are alternatives that come close, like gAudiolab.io, if you think that Lalal is compromised.
I’ve been mixing legacy Canadian acts in Dolby Atmos lately and I use Spectral Layers 12 on most of them. Here is the method I have used for a year and half.
Select audio clip.
On the info line click where it says No Extension and select Spectral Layers.
When it opens I select Unmix Song and I have everything checked.
When it’s finished unmixing, select all the new layers and drag them to existing tracks or the bottom of the timeline where it will create new tracks. The files automatically line up with the original track that is already in the timeline.
It is most important that the import settings are set to Copy to Audio Folder or that the import window pops up and then you can select Copy to Audio Folder.
If you don’t do this the tracks are coming from the temporary folder on your OS drive that Spectral Layers uses. If you empty this folder you will lose your audio stems in your project. They will also get stored in you .npr file and make it massively big. I don’t want this.
Now select the original audio clip and click on Spectral Layers in the info line and select No Extension and hit Save.
This is the best method I have used and I never have problems.
