Figured bass hold/resolution lines disappear after changing casting off

I am just starting to experiment migration from Finale (:-))!
I have a problem that seems to fit this thread. It is with Figured Basss (I have a global one, and one local), and hold/resolution lines occasionally disappearing except in the galley view (and in the igured bass popover). I made a (relatively ) small doc, that might be of interest: the current state of this doc is perfect, but one single user action (moving the first bar of the second page into the previous syatem) makes the problem appear in the moved bar. I would attach this doc, with an export of my library, and maybe some extra explanations, bur how should I proceed?

Welcome to the forum, Patrick. I’ve taken the liberty of moving your issue to its own thread.

Please attach the project here together with the steps required to reproduce the problem, and we’ll take a look.

As Daniel says, we can’t tell for certain without seeing the document.

However, one possibility: In Engraving Options > Figured Bass > Advanced Options, there is a setting for the Minimum Length of a Hold line. The default is 1 space.

If your music is tightly spaced, then there may not be enough room to show the lines.

Either reduce the setting, or give a bit more space to the music.

Thanks Daniel,
I am a (retired) developper, and I have used Finale since 2010, but as forums go, I am a total newbie :-). I am unable to find any upload related buttons or the “edit Box” I sa mentioned on the Forum Guide. Please help!
I am preparing the documents, I saw on the Guide that dorico projecte must be zipped, so I will zip them together with associate stuff. Is it ok?

Could this be the reason? If so, it is temporary.

Thank you for the info, Derrek.
But what is temporary? Without the ability to post attachments, any queation I may have will remain on hold.
The link says Reading 30 topics, and Entering , But waht is “Entering”? Creating? I probably cannot even do that? Is replying enough?
I have been browsing topics on this forum for one week (before registering), looking for solutions to problems I had, and till now finding the solutions thanks to the forum, but without annoying anybody. I suppose I should try to find those life-saving topics again, and add an approving reply (and one like I suppose)?

I believe your trust level is now sufficient for you to post an attachment, Patrick. Please try.

Thanks Daniel. I do have new actions available (like delete this post!), but I still do not see a upload or attach one.

Just drag the dorico file into the edit box!

Thanks Benwiggy , but where is the edit box and what does it look like?
I am not just a forum newbie, but my eye sight is not top, either :-).
Sorry for the annoyance.

The box where you type.

Oh! Very stupid of me :-)!
Now I will finish the packaging the zip.

A ‘raw’ Dorico file will work: no need to zip it.

Ok , here comes nothing:

Oups: I wanted to upload also my libary in case you needed it for the instruments I added. Tell me is yiu need anything.
Yjis topic shwocases a Figured Bass lines problem. The original topic ti which I replied was titled with Pedal lines, and did not mention Filgured Bass at all, but did mention sevral othe lines cmponents. So I strongly feel that my problem and the other ones are related. By the way wast there anything like a resolution for the othe one, solution or workaroind?
I rememberan intersting line about the hypothesis that the problem came of in some cas computing the position relative to the wrong player. at the I read that, I was playing with compacting the score, and I discovered a bar where instead od a line disapearing I saw a line that had no business there!
There is a sort of consistency here.

Again thanks to veryone for your Patience,
Patrick

As I suspected, your systems are far too full.

127% is too full.

All the notes are too close together, and there’s not enough space for the line.

I would remove the Abbreviated Staff names from every system; reduce the Staff Size; and remove the unnecessary manual adjustments to the staves.

Here is my revision.

You might also want to reduce the minimum line length for Figure extensions.

Thanks Benwigy.
This started with a comparison with th final 3 pages printed score. Indeed I had been mush more drastic with the abbreviated staff namrs: one capital letter and a not! And it should have been the first thing to do when I started the compacti.ng. I shall start from a point before I started compacting and apply this abbreviation and see what I can win. But I doubt that it will suffice to reduce the printing to 3 pages,.

In the meantime I have attached the Finale print. Don’t get me wrong: no offence intended ::slight_smile: . I am not a Finale fanatic, and I am well aware that I could do what I did with them by exploiting thei overuse of “overainting” without regard for design. But still Dorico seems excessively in favor or space.
Also I am not convinced that the compression be the only responsible for the line disappearance, in your image above the line lost has the same length than the line keptin the upper staff. I think you reacted primarily to the sloppiness of the result, and to the disregard of Dorico general principles.
I will try to get a version with the smallest footprint possible without sloppiness and discutable overrides, and conpare the distribution of music content with the Finale version.
Again, thanks
Patrick

By default, perhaps, but you can change the settings in LAyout Options for Note Spacing, and Vertical gaps.

I have produced scores that “match” scores made in Finale, as well as plate engraving, page for page, line for line. There are no limitations here.

This is very good news. I am starting from scratch the same ;project any way. For you the way to go is Note Spacing? And what part of Vertical Gaps would you advise?
Thanks benwiggy
Patrick

The default value of 4 for Note Spacing is perhaps a little generous, as my tailor would say.
3.5 is perhaps a better default – though this may need to go up or down, depending on the material. 3/8 needs more space than 4/2.

Again, the Vertical gaps will depend on the number of systems and staves on the page. Smaller values are usually better; and you can experiment.

Well, I’m going at it one little step at a time, and it definitvely shows improvement.
Thanks
