I’m going crazy. Trying to enter figured bass. I get the popup just fine, but then I hit return and there’s nothing there. I’m pretty new to Dorico, so I assume I’m missing something. Help!
What did you type in the shift-G popover? Also check the Layout Options → Players → Figured Bass. is the checkbox for displaying FB switched on for the instrument?
And welcome to the forum!
If you enter something into the popover that Dorico cannot interpret, it will fail without comment.
Thank you for the welcome. Figured bass is indeed checked. I am starting to wonder if it is some weird bug due to the fact that the score was scanned in using PlayScore 2 and then I deleted the realized right hand of the continuo part.
That may indeed be a clue. IIRC, figured bass is technically ‘owned’ by the right hand staff, because Dorico is meant to be intelligent about what chords the figures actually mean. As a cellist myself, I’m not entirely convinced by this approach (quite a lot of Basso Continuo is written as bass staff only, after all!), but it’s the choice the developers made. I wonder what happens if you try it in a full grand staff?
I have almost no experience using figured bass, but I think you’re on to something. I’m pretty sure you need to set Dorico to display figure bass for the instrument you’re entering it on. See here for instructions on showing figured bass in different layouts: Steinberg
Hopefully, someone with more figured bass experience will chime in shortly.
I tried it in a grand staff as well as in the cello part of a string trio and it works just fine. I’m tempted to just delete the entire staff and create a new one.
Imported files sometimes contain a lot of invisible rubbish, so that seems a good strategy to me.
Dear Karen, welcome to the forum.
After .xml import it is always good to “clean” up
the result, as - depending on the source - xml can be interpreted in quite a variety. As example, sometimes 2 Violins will be imported as one instrument with 2 staves.
It is always good to additionally create exactly the players you need and - as you suggested - copy the music over.
Thank you all for your thoughts. Just to let you all know, deleting the bass line was indeed the solution. Thankfully it is quite sparse, so not a big problem to redo.
