File Does Not Appear In Windows Taskbar "Recent" When Saving New Version

Expected: If you save a new file version, it shows up under the recent files when right clicking the windows task bar.

Actual: The new file version does NOT show in the recent files.

Reproduce:

  1. Create fresh new project.
  2. File → Save New Project
  3. Close Cubase.

Workaround:
File → Open → Open Project.

Notably, the file shows up under the recent projects in the Hub. However, opening the file via the hub does NOT fix the problem.

It only appears in the Windows recent file list after you’ve opened it from Windows. Double+click on a .cpr file and it will get added to the list.

That is indeed another workaround. Using File → Open also works.

However, all these workarounds take extra time.

Steinberg doesn’t have any control over that. It’s how Windows operates. The right click menu in your screenshot shows recently opened files.

From a user experience perspective, it feels inconvenient. Takes me out of the creative flow.

I want to quickly load the latest version of my project.
Now I have to:

  1. Open Cubase (Takes ~20 seconds to load)
  2. Open the project (Can take up to 1 minute)

For now, I reopen the project before I quit it.

These take the same amount of time however you open them. Unless you’re opening Cubase for the second time, when it’s much quicker.
As for workflow, is WINKEY+[Num Key], then double-click a file in The Hub really so onerous?

[edit]
The Recents list is only added to when using the Windows Save/Open File dialogue. This is a Windows thing, not Cubase.

As mentioned in the original post, opening from the hub does not add it to the Windows taskbar list either which makes me think it’s a Cubase bug rather than intended Windows behaviour.

This is the only way to add it to the Explorer Jump list. It’s not Steinberg’s fault. For once!

Instead of “Recently Opened” files, Cubase could have JumpListItems with “Recently Closed files”. Which makes much more sense in my opinion.

Here is an example of how the Edge browser does that:

The default “Recents” list might only be added to with the Windows Save/Open File dialogue.

However, the Edge browser skips this “Recents” list alltogether. Will create a new issue with the Recently closed tab as it would transitively solve this issue.

I created a feature request that would also solve the current issue:
