Received this message from MakeMusic this morning:
On September 16th, Apple will release the next Mac operating system, Sequoia. We want to remind all users that this macOS does not meet the system requirements for Finale and is not compatible . While Finale may continue to work on the latest OS, we recommend exercising caution before updating any device that you would like to continue using Finale on.
Yes, it all seems to work fine. Likely issues will be things like UI glitches, rather than functional problems.
One would hope that as F27 runs on Apple Silicon, it should be reasonably up-to-date (in terms of communicating to the OS…), so hopefully Apple won’t kill anything that it relies on for a while…
First thought that came into my mind “they did know this beforehand - and in a panic threw the complete development of Finale, it was just too much to keep up for them….”
Thanks benwiggy! This is good news. It seems odd and unfortunate MakeMusic would issue such an apparently unfounded grave warning about Sequoia amid numerous Finale users doing the crossgrade to Dorico.
I am still hopeful team Dorico can find a way allowing Finale 26 users who never upgraded to Finale 27 to purchase Finale 27 for the benefits of XML 4 in converting literally thousands of Finale files to Dorico. As a Dorico user since 1.0 I don’t need the crossover. I need Finale 27.
If it’s any encouragement, @peerlessnerd, I am still running Sibelius 6 (2009) on my old MacBook (aluminum, 2008) which I deliberately never updated from MacOS 10.5 Leopard. And I intend to keep it running for another 15 years.
Yes, but the real sticking point was @peerlessnerd 's last line:
I’m in the same boat. I’ve been with Dorico from the start, but I have a backlog of Finale files, and I happen not to have upgraded to v27 yet. I contacted Finale about this, and got the stock answers, the whole process ending frustratingly inconclusively. (So far. It’s conceivable that they’ll get back to me again, but I’m not holding my breath.)
Thanks Mark_Johnson, this is reassuring. Your reply echoes an earlier advice post here from Darcy James Argue. My Late 2013 Mac Pro continues to serve me well, but is very difficult to upgrade. It will be replaced by a new maxed out Mac Mini with the X4 chip. (Rumors say maybe Christmas or early 2025.) My ancient Mac Pro will stay with the current OS, able to open Finale files for many years, or until I can update thousands of Finale files to Dorico. Hopefully a solution can be reached for me to purchase Finale 27 to enjoy more robust XML transfer short of buying the cross grade I don’t need.
It occurs to me that the only files I need to move to a new format are files I expect I will want to re-arrange. Others can exist as PDF’s or in printed form. Of course one wants to be on the safe side when making that distinction.
What I find absolutely hilarious in this message is that “macOS” is supposedly not able to be at the illumination heights needed to run “Finale” … it is just … not worthy!
I am glad I visited this blog and read this post. I have been worried about this since Finale announced that they were ending finale and pushing Dorico. As such I purchased Dorico and even purchased the Keyboard to make it easier to learn. Did not help much as learning Dorico is going to take a very very long time. So I installed Sequoia and am happy to report that finale worked flawlessly. I am talking about a 1440 measure quartet with 40,000 entries. Thank God:-)
First question. I am using al VSL instruments. I am finding changing patches or playing technigues very hard. For example I place different string articulation on the staff and they are not reflected in the VSL patches. I am sure I am missing something:-)
dbagno- Good to get further evidence supporting benwiggy’s findings, but as Ben mentioned, all the “nooks and crannies” haven’t been fully explored thus far. If somebody finds something that doesn’t work in Finale under Sequoia I trust they will let us know that important info here.
For all the yak, yak, yak over this along with MM’s confirmation that 27 is not supported over Sequoia. They say it’s “incompatible”. Really? I have yet to run into a single problem nor have I heard of any.
Nobody has to run a virtual machine or any of that nonsense. Since 2017, all one has to do is to add an APFS Volume using Disk Utility, download Sequoia and install it into that Volume. Install 27. Use Option-Boot to change Volumes at will. This does assume that your Mac is new enough to support a Sequoia Volume (2017 iMac Pro and Mac Pro, most other 2018 and newer Macs).
APFS Volumes share drive space and you can view and access files as you need. If you later decide to upgrade your Sonoma Volume, deleting the test Volume takes a few seconds and any drive space is recovered (move any saved work files from one to the other first, of course).
@dbagno, since your post has nothing to do with the thread’s topic, it might be missed. (And anyway, it really should be placed in a more appropriately topical thread.)
Have you tried searching the forum for VSLi and playing techniques? There are many threads about it, and you may find existing help there before waiting for someone to find this post.
