Finally got around to trying cubase 14

First, let me just say I’ve been using Cubase since the mid 90s. I’ve been through all the changes with him. I did not update cubase 13 to 14 because I didn’t see enough benefits to warrant it. But curiosity got the best of me so I downloaded it and did the trial. I’m very underwhelmed I’m glad I didn’t upgrade.

I’m not gonna get into all the details, but the bottom line is the interface is dated. I was hoping to see a much more modern layout I’m more modern sounds and instruments. I sure hope that cubase 15 is a huge upgrade because 14 is highly underwhelming.

That said if you think 14 is worth the upgrade, I’m willing to listen to reasons you think so. Otherwise, I will wait till 15. But I have to tell you I’m very tempted to head over to Ableton live at this point.

Out of curiosity, what daws have a more modern layout in your opinion?

I occasionally check out other daws and always leave them after a few test minutes for one reason or another….usually looks/navigation being the first thing I think sucks.

Cubendo (for me anyway) is a familiar home feeling….sort of like wheeling my chair up to a Quad Eight Pacifica in 1978…..as opposed to a Peavey pa mixer

What modern sounds you expecting? I can’t imagine what more I could ever use myself….although I use sooooo many 3rd party things. What’s your concept of modern?

There seems to be a lot this about.

Most of your disillusion seems very subjective. “Modern”? Compared to what? And I don’t think Ableton has changed it’s interface much since day one. Still ugly as sin. But certainly not “modern”.

I have to say, the logic of “I’ve used Cubase for 30 years, but now since I don’t like the colors and fonts, I’m going to dump all that knowhow and investment and stop using the product version I already own, and instead go buy a new DAW I’ll have to learn all over again” is rather counterintuitive to me.

But hey, as the French say, “Vive la différence.”

Well, it’s not just the font and the colors. It’s the entire workflow and their very dated windows and messaging system. The UI is just old and clunky. Have you used their “vocal chain” plug-in??? shockingly they didn’t even update it for the latest version of Cubase

Well, you were able to test C14 for 90 days and it didn’t bring anything to the table that was worth the update for your personal workflow. And that’s fine - everyone has a different workflow and needs!
You’ll find plenty of threads around here where people describe what they like about C14. Personally, I think C14 is a great update! But again, that’s up to taste.
The GUI has been discussed at length here. Let’s say the common verdict comes to this: “There’s room for improvement.” However, if C14’s design choices makes you wanna switch to Ableton - we can’t hold you back.

… et bonne chance
