First Bar Rest not included in Multi-Measure Rest?

I am engraving parts and I noticed that the first bar of some sections that have rests are not being consolidated along with the other rests next to it. So you basically have a one bar rest and then a multi measure rest next to it for 4 or 5 bars. I have tried everything to consolidate them, I’ve toggled the consolidation switch, then I went to the engraving options and checked there because I have a rehearsal mark and I think that might block it from being included with the multi measure rest, but at the same time it does it on some sections and not others. Any advice appreciated !

Welcome to the Dorico forum @deboracahoon
Items such as text will prevent a bar from consolidating if the item is attached to anywhere in the bar except the start of the first beat. Also check for anything which can have an extender line (gradual dynamics, for example) which might continue into that bar.

thank you for your response! I was able to solve it: the mistake I made is that I started formatting in the WRITE window instead of the ENGRAVE widow (I switched from finale and still getting the hang of the Dorico system!). So when I entered a rehearsal mark letter with SHIFT-A and additionally added VERSE 1, it put VERSE 1 below the letter instead of next to it and it looked weird, so I fixed the visual issue and put it next to it. Since I did that in the WRITE window, it shifted the rehearsal mark to a bar and that is what messed it up. So I put it back to how Dorico put it in and then went to the ENGRAVE window and that is where I was able to fix it visually. I will say though, it takes double the work and it would be super cool if Dorico would implement a change in the next update where rehearsal marks are put next to each other if added in the same spot, that would really help and be a great automation. It puts it in an odd spot right now, but all good, I figured it out !!

I don’t know if it would help, but you can add a suffix to a Rehearsal Mark…
